Have you heard about our Community Connects grants?

The grants help fund projects that promote the inclusion and contribution of older people in community life, and support communities to prepare for an ageing population.

The fund makes one-off grants of up to $15,000. The grants are open to any New Zealand council, community organisation, or registered non-profit organisation. Applications for our current funding round close on 9 October.

Our last funding round was a huge success and helped fund a range of different projects across the country, that had focuses like reducing loneliness and social isolation of older people, developing an age-friendly community plan and supporting people with dementia.

With the right planning and support, we can create environments where older people are valued, connected and able to participate in their community.

In 1894 Violet Kerr Taylor of Alberton defied her mother Sophia's wishes to secretly wed her beau - Edward Gilmour - at St Andrew's church in Epsom. Elder brother Vincent gave her away and sisters Winifred and Mildred were possibly present.

Or at least, this the story we have been telling at Alberton for many years, backed up by recollections from descendants ....

A new document discovered for the upcoming historical Tour & Tea as part of the Auckland Heritage Festival 2020, has thrown the elopement and relationship between Violet and her mother into question and there are now several possibilities for what might have happened. Family mythologies are captivating tales that run deep!

Join us at St Andrew's Epsom as we trace back this story and revise the possible scenarios. Along with snippets on late 19th Century NZ weddings and Victorian attitudes towards elopement & marriage, the tour will also take in the sights of this charming Category 1, Gothic Revival church and includes a meander through the graveyard.

Followed by tea & scones served from the vintage china back at Alberton! With plenty of time to explore the house and garden.

Tour & Tea. Violet Kerr Taylor's Wedding at St Andrew's Epsom. Saturday 26 September 10am & 1:30pm. $25 includes tour, tea & scones and Alberton admission. Bookings essential. Email alberton@heritage.org.nz or call 846 7367

Please note this event will still proceed even under level 2 restrictions. Numbers will be reduced, more of the tour will be seated and contact tracing, hygiene and food service protocol will be in place.

Auckland’s Laneway music festival will not go ahead this year as organisers “do not believe we can operate to our full capabilities.”

In a statement, they said: “After much deliberation, we are very disappointed to announce that Laneway Festival Auckland will not be taking place in Summer 2021.

“The current circumstances surrounding border closures and the unpredictability of future Covid-19 outbreaks have created an extremely tough environment for festivals

The festival was postoned until 2022 and organisers were “sending our love and support to all our loyal crew and suppliers who we hope to see again, along with all the punters, in summer 2022.”

Laneway, which has run for the past 11 years, usually features major international musicians as headliners; last January’s festival was led by performances from English acts The 1975, Charli XCX, and Ruel.
