Auckland has topped the global rankings of liveability, rising 11 places to take the top spot.
The survey, commissioned by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), gives mathematical weight to such a claim. New Zealand's world-leading response to the spread of Covid-19 has been cited as one of the leading factors in the significant jump in rankings.
The EIU's index rates the living conditions and comprises 30 factors grouped into five categories: stability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

The man who was arrested at the cycle rally over the Auckland Harbour Bridge on Sunday says having cycle access on the bridge is key to modernising the city.
Epsom resident Jason Mathieson arrived early and broke through the police blockade at the Curran St on-ramp to the bridge shortly before Bike Auckland's 'Liberate the Lane' rally began.
Mathieson, who works as bicycle messenger and claims to “live on my bike”, believes a cycle path over the bridge is the key to unlocking Auckland as a modern city.
“It should be an exciting project for the city.”
After unsuccessfully pressuring police to “let this happen”, Mathieson saw his opportunity to throw himself and his bike over the gate when one of the police officers momentarily glanced away.
“It's not like you are trying to break the law, but rather break and idea, the idea that bikes can’t go over the bridge.”
As Mathieson made his way to the bridge, he thought he had made it, until he saw another police blockade in his way, where he was arrested.
“I watched everyone go over the bridge from the back of the police car.”

Residents on Princes St in the upmarket North Shore suburb of Northcote Point were first told the Crown needed to acquire their homes in March last year.
Back then, the plan was for the Northern Pathway to be built as an attachment to the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge, with the properties needing to make way for the project's off-ramp.
That plan was dropped in favour of the new cycling bridge announced by the Government last week. But the homes – worth an average of $3.3m each – still have to go.

Browns Bay locals fear property on the edge of an eroding cliff will soon collapse onto the popular beach below, as the property owner battles a lengthy resource consent process to stabilise the site.
The property on Beechwood Rd in Rothesay Bay was issued a dangerous building notice in September 2020 following a spate of slips which sent boulders, fencing and a mature pōhutukawa tree tumbling down onto Browns Bay Beach.
The notice did not apply to the house, but decking, fencing and concrete piles - some of which protrude over the edge of the cliff.
Auckland Council previously told Stuff it was satisfied two houses near the cliff’s edge were not at risk, however regular beach-goer Paul Jury said pipes, balustrades, orange safety fencing, a second pōhutukawa tree and bits of concrete continue to pile up on the beach.
Jury believed it was only a matter of time until “something serious” fell down the cliff during a storm or strong winds.
The owners of the property atop the cliff had applied for resource consent to repair and stabilise the site, but this was taking longer than expected "due to the complexity of the site access and the work required", Auckland Council’s David Pawson said.
