Habit-Building for High School

NumberWorks'nWords Henderson

Approaching later primary school years can be a time of mixed emotions for students and their parents. Independence is emerging in the form of homework and study time, interest in specific subject areas might be developing, and ideas about the world and how to make a positive impact are surfacing.

Auckland bakers are being called to roll up their sleeves to help vulnerable animals.

The SPCA is appealing for keen cooks to take part in its annual Cupcake Day fundraiser on November 2.

The event has raised nearly $3.2 million over the years, helping tens of thousands of animals that come through SPCA's doors each year in need of care, shelter and veterinary treatment.

Budding chefs are invited to whip up a batch of cupcakes before selling them at work, school and to family and friends.

Last year saw 1092 home bakers and 641 businesses get involved.

SPCA CEO Andrea Midgen said recent events had taken a big bite out of the charity but here was something tangible supporters could do to help.

Funds raised will be used to aid in rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing animals in need around the country.

I took the two fugliest pieces of fabric I could find (because I didn't want to do anything else with them!), and made a shade cloth for my pansies today. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ It works beautifully. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Also, I've got Californian poppies open in my garden today. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

The City Rail Link's tunnel boring machine has arrived in Auckland after a voyage of more than 9000 km from China.

Dubbed Dame Whina Cooper, the machine will excavate the rail tunnels for the city's largest ever transport infrastructure project.

It was shipped from its factory in southern China on board the BBC Orion and will be trucked to the City Rail Link site in Mt Eden for reassembly.

City Rail Link Ltd chief executive Dr Sean Sweeney said the machine's arrival signals an important transition for the project.

It marks a symbolic crossover from those enabling works to the complex and hefty job of finishing our tunnels and stations, he said.

"Construction is ramping up quickly."

People are invited to the see the machine close up at an open day planned for December.

More details will be announced next month.

The tunnel boring machine will be used to excavate two 1.6 km tunnels from Mt Eden to the CBD to link with the tunnels already dug from Britomart Station.

Work will start later this week on excavation of the first 51 metres of the tunnel at Mt Eden.

Excavation of the cavern and trench will make room for the machine to take over mining.

People will be able to keep track of Dame Whina Cooper's progress when tunneling begins.

An on-line link will measure the journey below Auckland in real time.
