The start and finish of daylight saving is used every year as a reminder for people to check their emergency plans and smoke alarms. New Zealand first adopted daylight saving as a trial in 1974 and despite some opposition, especially from farmers, it was officially locked in from the last Sunday in October to the first Sunday in March. In 1990, after a further trial period, it was decided to extend daylight summer hours further for 24 weeks from the first Sunday in October until the third Sunday in March the following year. The current daylight saving period, which began in 2007, runs from the last Sunday in September until the first Sunday in April.
