Auckland council car park to skyrocket $40 a day

From January 21 the capped price for parking at the Auckland Transport-owned car park will rise from $24 to $40 a day. The capped rate kicks in for those who park for more than five hours. At the same time its hourly rate will rise from $4 to $4.50. A spokesman for Auckland Transport said the Downtown car parking building was frequently full meaning parking was not available for people who were going into the city centre to do business.
"Auckland Transport wants to encourage short-term parking in this building rather than all day parking." The spokesman said Auckland Transport also wanted people to use public transport or take active modes to the city centre if they were going to be there all day. He pointed to the cost of the nearest private car park - the Viaduct Car Park on Sturdee Street which charged $12 an hour or $45 a day. Barney Irvine, a spokesman on Auckland transport for the AA, said the big winners would be the private car parking operators as people switched to other car parks nearby. Irvine said he doubted private car park owners would jack up their prices to the same extent. "But it opens the door for private operators in that vicinity to bump up prices." He said commuters using the carpark would be unlikely to all switch to public transport.
"If it was a convenient option they would be doing it already." That meant people would move to private car parks which would be good news for the likes of Wilson and Tournament car parking companies.
The increase is the third hike in five years for commuters using the Downtown car park. In August 2015, Auckland Transport increased its daily parking rate at the Downtown, Civic and Victoria St car parks from $17 to $24 per day. The move came after the council removed Early Bird parking rates in December 2014, meaning drivers arriving before 8.30am and leaving before the car park closed could no longer pay the subsidised price of $13. At the time, the council said the change would reduce traffic congestion during morning rush hour, with extra revenue being used to upgrade public transport. The Auckland Transport spokesman said it would not be changing rates at the Civic or Victoria Street car parks which it also owns. The rates at those car parks will remain at $4 per hour and $24 a day. The spokesman said unlike Downtown those buildings were not clogged with people parking all day.

Free rosemary wood kindling

Rose from Glen Eden

I've radically pruned a large, old rosemary bush and in the process of breaking it up into kindling sized sticks and small logs. There will be boxes of it and I think will make a fragrant fire - is anyone interested in picking it up, or some of it? Someone in Auckland ordered Uber Eats 438 times this year

At the other end of the scale, someone used the app to make the smallest order of the year: a single sachet of ketchup (needs must). The stats also show that Kiwis have a diverse palate. One person managed to try food from 109 different restaurants this year. But still, no matter how much variety we have at the touch of a button, it seems our greatest love, when it comes to takeaways, is still the humble butter chicken. This was the most ordered item via the app in 2018. The item people most searched for in the app was "burgers" (clearly before deciding to go ahead and order a butter chicken anyway). It seems Kiwis are not really that picky. "No onion" was the most common special instruction - followed by "no tomato" and "extra sauce". As for the late-night munchies, the big craving is the classic Big Mac combo - this was the number one choice up and down the country after midnight. Collectively, New Zealanders through Uber Eats ate 505,595 burritos and 653,430 chicken McNuggets this year. A fine effort in not-so-fine dining.

Due to the large amount of people last year we’ve got MORE facepainters, MORE balloon twisters, a BIGGER Beach treasure hunt, and all being well a water slide (may want to pack a change of clothes and a towel for the kids!) that should keep the queues down, as well as the return of the nativity quest with some fabulous prizes.

There is also a FREE BOOK for kids we are giving away whilst stocks last.

Carols start later, and then they are followed by SHANE and the SHAZAM BAND. Shane is a local legend - his number 1 hit St Paul stayed at the top for 6 weeks, and his current band are possibly the best yet, he’s gigging all time and we are so lucky to have them. So dig out your DANCING shoes, and grab a picnic or browse the FOOD TRUCKS.

This event is run by the BHBay Churches, with thanks to our sponsors the Whau Local Board and Ray Whites.

Shuttles run from Iona and Church of the Saviour (Kinross St) carparks for ease of parking, 5pm-6pm and 7pm-9.45pm.
