What will a climate change emergency mean for you?

Todd Niall Reporter from Western Leader

Hi Neighbours, Climate change has just been declared as an emergency by Auckland Council. It's symbolic but will be closely followed by measures to slow global warming, and will cost ratepayers perhaps from next year's budget. Do you think its a good idea ?

The chickens are a Titirangi icon, but recently a member of the community has been leaving food out for them, allowing the birds to multiply - and attracting rodents. Local resident Victoria Jack told The AM Show attempts to fix the root cause of the problem have been unsuccessful. "The council have tried to round up the chickens at some point, it's very hard actually - I'm not sure who [residents are] supposed to talk to because they're just running around the bush." She confirmed the rats move in groups of up to 10 and aren't scared of humans. Developments in Titirangi mean the gangs of rodents have moved into the village, which is a problem because they aren't small. "I have a small cat, and I would say the ones I have seen have been at least that size," Jack said. But some resident-initiated attempts to fix it have caused more problems, with one endeavour to remove the chickens ending in disaster. "Someone had gone and put some poison down, where this person puts the feed, and that was like a kind of chicken apocalypse - it was awful. "Literally all these chickens fell out of the trees, fell out of the bush having seizures and foaming at the mouth. "So you can't really do that - that's not a humane way of dealing with the problem." Jack hopes the chickens can be rounded up and removed humanely without the use of poisons that could damage other wildlife. She's also hopeful the person feeding the birds stops leaving food around for the rats to find.

Pets now allowed on Auckland trains

But pet owners will be kept on a tight leash, with strict rules in force. They'll only be allowed on trains, and only at off-peak times - between 9am and 3pm, and from 6:30pm on weekdays, and all-day on weekends and public holidays. They'll also have to be caged, and small enough to fit under the seat or on your lap. Auckland Councillor Cathy Casey says pet owners need to be trusted. "As a responsible dog owner, I'll make sure that my dog doesn't do poos and wees on public transport. If a person has an allergy and insists, 'I don't want your dog near me,' that's fine too." If your pet does have an accident, it's your responsibility to clean it up. And if the train is crowded, don't be surprised if you're denied entry. The trial ends in September. If successful, it may become a permanent reality. Casey expects it will be a "howling" success, saying it will bring many benefits. "Not everybody lives anywhere near a dog exercise area or a beach... so I can see this taking a huge number of cars off the road." "There are many Aucklanders that may not have access to a vehicle to take their pet to the vet or for when they want to explore the city, this will potentially benefit both the owners and the pets," added Stacey van der Putten, Auckland Transport group manager of metro services. And don't worry about getting your pooch an AT HOP card - pets travel for FREE.The trial doesn't include buses, which will still be limited to disability assist dogs.
