It’s no secret that Mount Etna in Sicily, the Canary Islands and the Yamanashi region in near Mount Fuji are all home to some of the world’s most diverse and exciting wines, which is why one of the leading authorities on volcanic wines is coming to New Zealand to host tastings on Saturday 28 July and Sunday 29 July.
Master Sommelier John Szabo will lead two tastings on volcanic wines at the New Zealand School of Food & Wine’s annual W&F Celebration, part of Auckland’s new Elemental Festival.
He was the first Canadian to add the letters MS (Master Sommelier) to his name, in 2004, and has since written Volcanic Wines, Salt Grit and Power - a book about volcanic wine regions.
Auckland is a fitting city to host Szabo since the greater Auckland region’s volcanic field has at least 52 volcanoes. The city’s scoria cones range from 10 to 120 meters in height, contributing an unexplored aspect to Auckland’s wine terroir.
“The question is how we can enhance the reputations of wines grown in the Auckland region given most of this region’s wineries are on volcanically derived sedimentary rock,” says Celia Hay of the NZ School of Food & Wine.
Szabo will speak at the school’s annual Wine & Food Celebration on Saturday 27July and Sunday 28 July in Central Auckland.

Police have warned of a phone scam which has left victims hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket. The scam, carried out by fraudsters claiming to be Spark and/or police, convinces victims to withdraw thousands of dollars from their bank accounts and send it to domestic and international addresses.
Last month, officers intercepted two separate packages in Auckland containing a total of $25,000. The two victims, one of whom was an 84-year-old woman, had their money returned by police.
However, most who fall for the scam won't be so lucky.
Have you - or someone you know - lost money to this scam? Let us know in the comments or send us an email at newstips@stuff.co.nz

Usually wouldn't bother posting this, but am now 9 months pregnant sitting on the floor after spending the day being ripped off 🤬 wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with such an unbelievable business. Truly shocking.

Within the community are 3 different types of homes catering to investors, families and young professionals. Each terraced home comes with a private back yard and each home comes with car parking and a private outdoor, green space, which flows out from the living room.
The forms and materials used to create The Groves hark back to the original West Auckland horticultural land uses. Inspired by glasshouses and simple farm buildings, you can see this reflected in the roof forms and materials used.
Matvin has a long history of building commercial developments, which has allowed us to use more robust and permanent materials in each home.
