Gardening inspo / advice?

Hi neighbours, I'm looking for some inspiration for starting a garden and thought who better to ask than the Neighbourly community. We have a reasonably sized patch of grass (although it's a bit on the lumpy/muddy side) and I'm keen to tidy it up, maybe start a veggie patch. But I have no idea where to begin. Does anyone have any experience starting something from scratch? Any advice for a novice gardener (if you had one tip for me what would it be)? Or good websites / books to take a look at? Cheers :)

Hi Neighbours,

We need help to re-furbish our charitable restaurant in Onehunga so we can get up and running and continue feeding bellies, not bins! Can you help?

We are looking for a sandblaster to do a site visit next week to check out one of the many jobs we have to get done - we need the painted plaster blasted off to expose the original concrete walls.

Everybody Eats is a multi-award winning charitable dining concept. We take food that would otherwise go to waste and turn it into restaurant-quality meals. Our customers can pay whatever they like, even if it's nothing, for nutritious and freshly prepared food. We aim to be part of solving three huge problems we have in NZ: food waste, food poverty, and social isolation. Everybody Eats is not a soup kitchen, we provide our diners with a three-course meal served at shared tables, which encourages them to interact with our volunteers and other diners.

The pay-as-you-feel model is inclusive; it allows people who can afford to pay for a meal to do so, and perhaps contribute to future meals while giving more vulnerable people an opportunity to enjoy a dignified experience without feeling any guilt or stigma. We work almost exclusively with food that would otherwise go to waste which we get from New World and Kiwiharvest mostly. We are hugely collaborative and work with a lot of NZ's top chefs including Josh Emmet, Ben Bayly, Javier Carmona and Dariush Lolaiy.

We have been running a very busy and successful pop-up at Auckland's Gemmayze St. We operated permanently for 6 months in Avondale before realising we needed our own, larger, purpose-designed premise. We have a lease starting 1 July of an amazing building in Onehunga that we need to convert into something special for the community to come together.

We are hoping you will see this as a great way to get involved in a local project, helping those in need and bringing the community together, so will be able to provide labour free or at cost to support our fit out. What we can offer in return is exposure through our social media channels - Facebook, just under 11k and Instagram just under 5.5k. Because we are a charity we get really good organic reach and have one of the highest engagement rates I know of, which means we get a lot of likes, comments and clicks compared to most.

You can contact me through here or call/text me on 021856884 or email ajbutlander9@gmail.com

Thanks for your time

Stockholm is home to one of the world's most famous eco-neighbourhoods, Hammarby Sjöstad. But does it really offer a template for green urban living that can be replicated in other fast-growing cities?
Construction started in the late 1990s and it's currently home to about 25,000 residents. Its reputation for sustainability comes from the way it handles energy, water and waste - initially designed to cut the environmental impact by 50% compared to a typical suburb - and its goal of maintaining green habits among residents. Circular Economy
-
The BBC's Circular Economy series highlights the ways we are designing systems to reduce the waste modern society generates, by reusing and repurposing products. All the apartments are made from raw materials designed to provide maximum insulation during Sweden's winters. Gas and electricity come from a range of renewable sources including solar panels and biogas. Some of the biogas is extracted from sewage sludge from the area's water treatment plant, where rainwater, storm water and melt water from snow and ice are processed locally.
Residents sort their rubbish into categories and put it in outdoor chutes which suck the waste underground to a central storage point. Combustible waste is burned and turned into further biogas powering some of the city's buses.
Public transport, including wide cycle lanes and wooden boulevards hugging the water's edge, a tram line, buses and a free ferry service, is designed to discourage commuting by car. Commonly cited reasons for its success include Stockholm's relative wealth compared to other cities, and an ongoing nationwide focus on green issues. Sweden's latest goal is to become a net zero greenhouse gas emitter by 2040, with Hammarby Sjöstad aiming to get there by 2030.There has also been a much higher degree of co-operation here, between different state agencies and private companies, than in previous projects.
"It was the first project in Stockholm where the city planners, real estate agents, traffic agency, water company, environmental and health administration worked together in one office," says Gunnar Söderholm, Stockholm's environmental health director, who has worked on the initiative in various roles since its inception.
While "it wasn't easy", he says being in such close proximity helped them tackle disagreements and "created a new model for city planning, which we still benefit from".
The approach has influenced several other projects, the latest of which is Stockholm Royal Seaport, with plans for at least 12,000 new homes and 35,000 workspaces.
