A West Auckland man was nearly seriously injured this morning during a protest to protect dozens of mature native trees from development as one came crashing down right above him.
The dramatic scenes took place on Canal Rd, Avondale, where several sections originally home to 46 native trees, believed to be about 100 years old, have been on the market.
Nearly two weeks ago arborists started their work to clear the site before protesters turned up, and managed to stall the chainsaws after about 10 trees were felled.
Abel, a veteran environmental activist and now Green Party candidate for New Lynn, has returned the past 12 days and managed to keep the chainsaws at bay by scaling various trees, earning a trespass notice in the process.
"It is an aggregious blot on the council that they have not done anything."
A report this month, and presented today to the council's Environment and Climate Change Committee, showed some parts of Auckland had lost nearly 10 per cent of their canopy cover in only a few years, largely due to development.

Hi neighbours,

Today, Stuff is launching a campaign to make Matariki a public holiday from 2021.

Plucked from obscurity and given the breath of life, since the turn of the century, Matariki has blossomed into an inclusive, popular event.

Tied to the rising of Matariki, the Pleiades star cluster, in the night sky, the festival marks the start of te Mฤtahi o te tau, the new year.

Once a casualty of colonisation, Matarikiโ€™s comeback has fostered greater use of te reo Mฤori, and recognition for Mฤori customary practices.

We believe it is past time to officially acknowledge all Matariki stands for in our national calendar. To learn more about Stuff's campaign, click here

The Department of Conservation has confirmed its controversial tahr culling programme is underway.
On Friday afternoon, DOC confirmed it had started its 2020-21 culling programme on Thursday, July16.
A DOC spokesperson said the department intends to undertake 60 hours of aerial control in the Aoraki/Mt Cook and Westland/Tai Poutini national parks, and another 65 hours in other areas of the conservation estate.
DOC operations director Dr Ben Reddiex said thousands of bull tahr and other tahr will be left for trophy hunters across 425,000ha of public conservation land, but in the 148,000ha national parks, New Zealandโ€™s native species needed to come first. Read More...www.stuff.co.nz...

A Corner Stone

High upon a mountain top
Views looking out afar
Where our short-sighted views stop
Exists a planet for the Tahr

To live, to exist
Is the privilege at birth
A right shared by the Tahr
On this barren piece of Earth

Boots made from the hide
Of an animals skin
Will soon be worn by hunters,
To extinguish the life above, where the Tahr are living

Then this mountain high top
Will exist to give life
And this Tahr cease to exist
And this Corner Stone will have only cold fossils for life

Hundreds of people marched through central Auckland as part of a hฤซkoi protesting the proposed new Auckland Regional Landfill site on Friday.
Private waste company Waste Management wants to build the rubbish dump in Dome Valley, on land between Wellsford and Warkworth.
It would replace the Redvale Landfill and Energy Park in Dairy Flat, which is predicted to reach capacity between 2026 and 2028.
But the valley's iwi and landowners worry any breach in the dump's lining could spill poisons into the Hลteo River.
Fight the Tip, Save The Dome Mฤori liaison Mikaera Miru said the consequences of an earlier rฤhui at the site being ignored were โ€œdevastatingโ€.
โ€œThis is the second biggest harbour on the planet, we need to look after it. It's Ngฤti Whฤtua food basket, we need to look after it and that's why we're here.โ€
What other solutions to Auckland's waste problem do you think should be explored?
