Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will start producing hundreds of millions of doses of its new coronavirus vaccine by Christmas after Oxford University researchers revealed a scientific breakthrough with the possibility to terminate the pandemic.

The vaccine was on average 70 per cent effective in foiling the disease, according to results from phase three trials.

It’s unknown yet whether New Zealand was in the line for this vaccine.

But New Zealand has already signed two agreements for other vaccines- the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine along with the vaccine from Janssen Pharmaceutica.

Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce on Monday night said vaccination would be mandatory for passengers.

“We are looking at changing our terms and conditions to say that for international travellers, we will ask people to have a vaccination before they can get on the aircraft,” he said.

Auckland households face ongoing water use restrictions through the summer with the council not convinced the risks of the ongoing drought are gone.

Hoses connected to mains water could be used only if fitted with a handheld trigger, under a recommendation to be considered by councillors on Thursday.

Auckland’s supply dams are 72 per cent full, compared with a norm of 91 per cent, and the region is relying heavily on the Waikato River pipeline for 40 per cent of its needs.

Some Aucklanders have been coming up with innovative ways to conserve water.

Auckland Council is calling for your help to name a new ten-day festival celebrating Tamaki Makaurau.

You have until December 16 to submit ideas for the event which will be wrapped around next year's Auckland International Cultural Festival.

"Our vision is for all Aucklanders to be proud of our multi-cultural city and feel a strong sense of belonging and understanding," said David Burt, Auckland Council events manager.

The expanded festival will run from March 19 to March 28, starting with nine days of activities in the region's arts and community centres.

It ends with the big finale- Auckland International Cultural Festival- on March 28 at Mt Roskill War Memorial Park.

People who make a submission could win one of two $50 food vouchers, which can be redeemed at the food stalls on March 28.

Do you support exotic animals being traded as pets to be confined with chains, in cages, etc? As upsetting as this article is, there has to be demand for supply.
