Hundreds of native seeds fall and grow, even in our own little garden and gravel driveway, so we have been potting them up in recycled pots with roughly-composted wood chip mulch so our garden restoration clients can have free plants for planting season (or earlier if they have a loose soil and are prepared to water them…but Autumn is much easier!)
We are now offering 10-20 plants (depending on size), in a limited range of species – this year we concentrated on kawakawa, karamu, nikau and Carex – free with every 10 hours of gardening or habitat restoration, while stocks last.
We will look after the plants for those customers till Autumn.
Here’s what they look like at present:

Do you ever feel like your stuff holds you back, but the thought of decluttering just seems too hard? If so, you’re not alone.
This is the first of a series of articles dedicated to helping you to downsize, declutter and rightsize your life, brought to you by Ryman Healthcare in conjunction with decluttering expert Peter Walsh.
When helping people to declutter, Peter never starts by focusing on the stuff itself. Every item in your home has a story, so the first step is to think about what that story is.
Maybe you’re thinking about downsizing as you approach retirement but still have all the artwork and toys and books that belonged to your now adult children, and don’t know what to do with them. Perhaps letting go of that old sports equipment means letting go of a vision you had of yourself that no longer fits who you are. Maybe you’re holding onto heirlooms you have no use for because you want to keep the memory of the person alive.
No matter what your situation is, it’s easier to declutter and downsize if you start by identifying the feelings that underlie your attachment to your stuff before tackling the stuff itself.

Gender based violence occurs in the family and in the general community, and affects the ability of women and girls to reach their full potential and participate in society. Domestic abuse is an incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, degrading and violent behaviour, including sexual violence, in the majority of cases by a partner or ex-partner, but also by a family member or career, and most commonly experienced by women. Abuse can also take the forms of physical assault, psychological abuse, social abuse, and financial abuse. The colour orange symbolises a brighter future, free of violence. It also serves as a means of demonstrating solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence and it is therefore used as the colour for this campaign.
Various activities are arranged around the world to draw attention to the need for continuing action to eliminate violence against women, projects to enable women and their children to escape violence and campaigns to educate people about the consequences of violence against women. Locally, women’s groups organise walks, communal meals, fundraising activities and present research on violence against women in their own communities.
Please let me know if you are keen to dress your shop window in orange either on or between the 25 November which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and the first day of the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence to the 10 December, which is the United Nations Human Rights Day. You can email me at sinorthshore@siswp.org and I will send you posters etc for your window.
The SI North Shore members will be acknowledging this campaign by photographing all the shop windows, dressed in orange, to pick the best dressed windows that are supporting this campaign.
