Peter Cooke has worked in the same job for 49 years.

The 73-year-old is the longest serving staff member at Mount Eden's Community Corrections service in Auckland.

The probation officer has been recognised with a long service and good conduct award.

It all started in 1971 when Cooke joined the probation service after gaining his law degree at Auckland University.

The probation service "seemed a good place to start and much more exciting than being a lawyer," he said.

"(I) stayed because I still have some of the idealism left and the criminal justice system is still an exciting place to work in."

In 1971 the Probation Service, as it was known, was a division of the Department of Justice.

This changed with the establishment of the Department of Corrections in 1996.

In Auckland, there was a main office in High St with reporting centres in the suburbs, Cooke said.

"I looked after Henderson and you were at the reporting centres at night on your own.

"In addition, probation officers collected fines and reparation as part of a special condition of probation, and a cash box with a float of money accompanied us."

Cooke was the sole charge district probation officer at Kaikohe.

He recalls travelling on his own to do home visits for most of the rural caseload.

Cooke has seen many changes over the years.

People under probation orders were now much more difficult to manage and more unpredictable, he said.

Before the 2002 Sentencing Act, there was a national Parole Board for those sentenced over 7 years Imprisonment and a District Prisons Board for each prison deciding release for those serving under 7 year sentences, Cooke said.

"They also decided on back end Home Detention before Home Detention became a separate sentence. "

When New Zealand’s Alert Level 4 came into effect in March 2020, schools around the country faced the challenge of a transitioning from onsite to online learning.

As students adjusted to the shift in their educational environment, many schools were ill-prepared to move to quickly to online learning. Schools such as St Peter’s in Cambridge were readily prepared for a seamless transfer between classroom and digital learning.

With each student ready to use online platforms such as Google Classroom and Hangouts, a streamlined shift was enabled as soon as the lockdown occurred.

Find out why more families are choosing St Peter’s at our Open Day on 12 March.

A divorce court in China has ordered a man to pay his wife more than $10,000 as compensation for the housework she did during their five-year marriage, in what is believed to be a landmark legal first.
In the ruling, which effectively puts a monetary value on housework, the court ordered Wang's husband, identified as Chen, to pay 50,000 yuan for neglecting his share of the domestic duties.
Such a judgment was made possible through a new civil code, which came into effect at the beginning of the year. The new provisions allow for a spouse who shoulders more responsibility in caring for children or elderly relatives, or carrying out unpaid housework, to request compensation from their partner in the event of a divorce. Both parties should negotiate the amount between them but, if they fail to agree, a court can decide for them. Interested? Read more here...

The Matariki cluster will send Aotearoa a new public holiday next year.

The actual date of Matariki will move but is expected to always fall on a Friday or Monday.

The first day off will be Friday June 24 in 2022.

Government advice suggests the new Matariki public holiday will cost businesses between $377 - $448 million.

But that advice does not include any potential economic benefits from the new public holiday, set to be introduced from next year.

The estimated cost has come under fire from ACT leader David Seymour who said the public holiday amounted to a tax on business.

Seymour suggested that the Government get rid of another public holiday to make way for Matariki.

Hi Neighbours,

From midnight tonight, Auckland will join the rest of the country in alert level 1.

At Alert Level 1, everyone can return without restriction to work, school, sports and domestic travel, and you can get together with as many people as you want.

One new case of Covid-19 in the community has been announced.

The new case is linked to the existing community cases and is already in quarantine, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

There are six new cases in managed isolation, four of which are historical.

What were your predictions for Auckland's alert level decision?
