Police aren't aware of a spike in rental property break-ins on the North Shore, but suggest that landlords:
• Keep windows and doors locked
• Maintain a "lived-in" appearance on empty properties
• Keep trees and bushes tidy so burglars can't hide in them
• Use good quality locks and a reputable locksmith
• Install sensor lights
• Keep garden sheds and garages secure.

As part of Auckland Council's EnviroSchools programme, a team of Botany Downs Secondary College students have been trapping and capturing rats at the school and local reserve.
