Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will start producing hundreds of millions of doses of its new coronavirus vaccine by Christmas after Oxford University researchers revealed a scientific breakthrough with the possibility to terminate the pandemic.

The vaccine was on average 70 per cent effective in foiling the disease, according to results from phase three trials.

It’s unknown yet whether New Zealand was in the line for this vaccine.

But New Zealand has already signed two agreements for other vaccines- the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine along with the vaccine from Janssen Pharmaceutica.

Qantas chief executive officer Alan Joyce on Monday night said vaccination would be mandatory for passengers.

“We are looking at changing our terms and conditions to say that for international travellers, we will ask people to have a vaccination before they can get on the aircraft,” he said.

Auckland households face ongoing water use restrictions through the summer with the council not convinced the risks of the ongoing drought are gone.

Hoses connected to mains water could be used only if fitted with a handheld trigger, under a recommendation to be considered by councillors on Thursday.

Auckland’s supply dams are 72 per cent full, compared with a norm of 91 per cent, and the region is relying heavily on the Waikato River pipeline for 40 per cent of its needs.

Some Aucklanders have been coming up with innovative ways to conserve water.

Auckland War Memorial Museum reopens its south atrium entrance on December 3 after 18 months of renovations.

Visitors will see new spaces, experiences, art works and eateries along with the exhibition Brickman Awesome: Epic LEGO Creations.

Work to transform the museum was launched in 2013 and 35% of the floor will have been changed by 2021,when the facelift comes to fruition.

Auckland Museum has worked with iwi and pacific communities in Auckland to create the new South Atrium as a space for pōwhiri, whakatau and other cultural celebrations, events and research.

It will be a place for visitors to exchange experiences, share knowledge and information.

A 7.5m tall replica of Nasa's Space Launch System (SLS), made from 450,000 Lego bricks, will go on display in the new lego exhibition.

The rocket, which certified professional Lego builder Ryan “The Brickman” McNaught spent 500 hours constructing, is one of more than 35 giant Lego models set to be showcased at the exhibition Brickman Awesome: Epic Lego Creations.

Do you know what timber your furniture is made of? 🤔

Dovetail Restorations Ltd

We’d love to hear what your favourite wood type is and we’ll give you our opinion of it! Pine gets a lot of flak but is a super versatile timber, and can always be stained to imitate other timbers, like this mid century “rimu” bedside table.

Auckland artist Shona Lyon has commemorated Sir John Logan Campbell by creating this double life-sized bust.

It took Lyon four months to bring to life the detailed bronze sculpture which towers three metres high in Cornwall Park, Auckland.

Turning an old one dimensional photograph into the 360 degree sculpture proved the biggest challenge for Lyon.

The bust pays tribute to Campbell, who gifted 425 acres of One Tree Hill land to the people of New Zealand in 1901, renaming it Cornwall Park.

Special memories of growing up next to the park inspired Lyon's family to donate the sculpture.

You have until December 16 to submit ideas for the event which will be wrapped around next year's Auckland International Cultural Festival.

"Our vision is for all Aucklanders to be proud of our multi-cultural city and feel a strong sense of belonging and understanding," said David Burt, Auckland Council events manager.

The expanded festival will run from March 19 to March 28, starting with nine days of activities in the region's arts and community centres.

It ends with the big finale- Auckland International Cultural Festival- on March 28 at Mt Roskill War Memorial Park.

People who make a submission could win one of two $50 food vouchers, which can be redeemed at the food stalls on March 28.
