Here at Neighbourhood Support we know first hand that communities that stay connected and prepared fare better in emergencies and natural disasters than those without a plan.

For the month of October, we want to see how you tackle emergency preparedness. From getting first aid training and stocking up on essentials to putting together a grab n’ go bag or working with your neighbours to create a neighbourhood resillience plan, a little bit of planning goes a long way to make sure you and your community can get through any situation. Joining or setting up a Neighbourhood Support group is a great way to keep in touch and work together to reach out, look out and help out one another no matter what life may bring.

Don’t forget! This month also coincides with New Zealand’s national earthquake drill and tsunami hikoi, ShakeOut, which will be taking place on Thursday, October 28th at 9:30am.

Let us know how you’re getting prepared this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz

Hi neighbours,

Sir John Key’s recent media blitz was full of suggestions for how the Covid-19 response could have been done better. Some have been found to be false (such as his claim we could have paid Pfizer for preferential supply), and some seem to have lit a fire under the Government to get things moving (such as the suggestion of home quarantining).

How do you feel about Key’s contribution?

MECOSS first began the Manukau East Shopping Shuttle in 2007, after identifying a need to help people who depended on family and friends or had to pay to get their shopping done.

“Many of these people were confined to their homes with few and limited choices for socialising,” says initiator Vasu Moses. “That was when I felt that if I could move and shake a few people something could be done to organise a weekly shopping trip for our seniors.

The Salvation Army jumped on board to offer free use of their van, Age Concern organised the passengers, and Botany Town Centre offered free hot drinks and a good shopping venue for people with limited mobility, and the service was born. From there the shuttle went from from strength to strength.

In 2021, MECOSS has its own van, a shopping-shuttle-coordinator and a hard working team of 25 volunteer drivers and companion shoppers.

The Manukau East Shopping Shuttle continues to be a wonderful community service helping those that otherwise might struggle to make it to a shopping centre on a regular basis while having a bit of fun in the process.
Anyone who wants to be part of the Manukau East Shopping Shuttle can contact Maureen on 0800 632 677.

That's why MECOSS holds Dance Yourself Happy, the Pakuranga & Howick Community Networking Meeting and the Botany & Flat Bush & Ormiston Networking Meeting at local community halls and venues.
Community space is a non-threatening place where people can all feel a part of something valuable. Theses hubs are part of the glue that binds communities and keeps connections alive - they're a physical representation of a sense of connectedness.
