Lighting around Papakura train station will be enhanced after the local board allocated nearly $70,000 to three transport projects.

A new bus shelter will be installed outside Rosehill Intermediate and way-finding signage will be erected at the station.

The shelter has been allocated $40,000, the signage $11,000, and safety lighting in the laneways closest to the station $18,799.

Board chair Brent Catchpole said the shelter would cater for a high number of school students and give them a safer area to wait for the bus.

A 2018 report revealed lighting issues near the town centre, including laneways with little lighting, he said.

“We will be able to install modern lighting to a number of sites.

“Better lighting is going to make people feel more confident walking in and around the station and we want to do our part to support residents using the train to take cars off our streets.”

Hi Auckland,

A $452 million 21-storey high-rise building has been unveiled and is to be built above one of Auckland's new railway stations.

Auckland Council has signed over a $40 million, 125-year lease to a Malaysian developer which will see construction take place over the City Rail Link's underground Aotea Station set to open in 2024.

The plans include commercial and retail space, 60 apartments and a public plaza. The developer, Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), will begin construction of the nearly half-billion dollar building after the completion of the station in 2024, and is expected to take about three years.

We watch captivated by the spectacle of those impressive America's Cup yachts foiling at 40 knots across the Hauraki Gulf, and at the same time, it's hard not to have a salutary reflection on the last 12 months.

Almost to the day, we were celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the New Zealand School of Food and Wine with special wine tastings, cooking classes, forage and gastronomic dinner for over 75 guests + our students. Many of our Christchurch team, including Lois, Philippe and Victoria had come up for the weekend. My mother-in-law, June Hay had also joined us from her retirement home in Christchurch. By Sunday 15 March, I was getting pretty nervous about Covid-19 and rather than have June stay in the North Island for a holiday, she returned home the next day. A few days later June's rest home went into lockdown and I counted the 14 days to see if we too had a NZSFW Covid Cluster. Fortunately not! See below some photos as we recalled the 10th Anniversary of the Christchurch Earthquakes.

Chris Hipkins has unveiled New Zealand's Covid-19 vaccination timetable.

Read more in Thomas Manch's story below:

The Government intends to dole out the Covid-19 vaccine to about half of New Zealand by the end of June, and the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions are “priority populations” to receive early access.

A long-awaited schedule for the Pfizer vaccine roll-out was published by Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins on Wednesday, and showed the country carved into four groups.

“This is a balanced plan that prioritises reducing the chance of future outbreaks while protecting our elders, those with underlying health conditions and those who live in locations where we know outbreaks have occurred,” Hipkins said in a statement.

The first group to receive the vaccine, border workers and their families, would be completed by the end of March.

The second, 480,000 frontline healthcare workers and people living in “high-risk settings” has already begun and would continue until May.

The 234,000 people living in these “high-risk settings” include older people and people with pre-existing health conditions in the Counties Manukau District Health Board (DHB) area, people in residential aged-care facilities, and older people living in a family environment that poses a similar risk to aged-care homes.

“Anyone who lives in the Counties Manukau DHB area who is 65 and older or who has an underlying health condition is also in Group 2. This recognises that there are many border operations and MIQ facilities and their workforces based in this area,” Hipkins said.

The third round of the roll-outs would be for all other people aged 75 years old, then 65 years old, then people with pre-existing health conditions which include heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, respiratory conditions, kidney disease, and cancer.

The Government hopes to begin vaccinating this group – 1.7 million people in total – in May.

The fourth group is the remainder of the population, 2 million people who will start receiving the vaccine from July.

What do you think of the schedule for the Pfizer vaccine roll-out?

The Citizens Advice Bureau is celebrating 50 years of service in Aotearoa working for positive social change in an ever changing world. A nationwide, locally based community organisation with over 80 branches, providing free, confidential, independent information and advice.

The CAB helps people to know and understand their rights and responsibilities and find the community services they need. In a time of Covid-19, Citizens Advice Bureau staff and volunteers mobilised straight away and adapted to our way of delivering services. Further details were captured in a report Citizens Advice Bureau – Supporting people through Covid-19. www.cab.org.nz...

A people-centred service is more valued now than ever and is a service that the CAB is proud to deliver. In this age of uncertainty, we remain optimistic about the future – a future filled with change for good. This means countless hours of advice to the public, providing information on everything from housing and consumer rights to immigration and employment. This is a time to recognise the thousands of skilled CAB volunteers and staff who dedicate their time to providing free confidential advice and access to the rights and services people need.

“We are proud of the legacy the CAB has created and for the future it will forge,” says Linda Kaiou from CAB Otara. “We want to remind everyone that our service remains free, trustworthy and confidential – where people can pop in and visit, call us on the phone, or contact us via our website by using live chat or sending a message”, says Linda Kaiou. “We want to acknowledge our hard-working volunteers and staff,” and let them know we appreciate them on a daily basis. “Our volunteers are diverse, skilled, experienced and empathetic to any story or situation that comes our way.”

CAB volunteers are dedicated to giving back to their community and undertake an intensive training process that ensures they are ready for queries and issues, and provide options based on research. “We take the time to listen, aim to ensure that you get the information you need – whether it’s your rights in a particular situation or to find a specific service, we will find a way forward,” says Linda Kaiou.

“You can visit us at Shop 1&2, 46 Fair Mall, Otara Town Centre, Bairds Rd, Otara or call 09 274 6577 or 274 8327. We’re here to help.”
