We’re researching stories for our Tāmaki Herenga Waka: Stories of Auckland exhibition opening next year and want to hear from anyone with early memories of the Auckland Harbour Bridge and how it changed life for Aucklanders, especially on the North Shore.

Email us at haveyoursay@aucklandmuseum.com if you have an interesting story you’d like to share.

Machete wielding man in Countdown

Yesterday at around 3.30pm I was in the Takapuna Countdown store with my 16 year old son and his mate. The boys were at the self checkout, I was in the pharmacy at the front part of the store.
All of a sudden there was a lot of shouting and scuffle. I looked to see 3a man run into the store, through the self checkout section and into the main part of the store. Close behind him were 2 other guys, one wielding a machete! They ran into the self check out area waving this machete around. My on (who is 6 foot 2 and no baby!) said the machete missed his face by a foot! The 2 men swore and shouted and then reluctantly left the store. At one point of them leaving they stopped and shouted back again, still swinging the machete around. This was right beside the pharmacy counter where I was standing. To be honest I was petrified.

When I told the pharmacist to call the Police, he just shrugged!!!

I was told by staff at Countdown the Police had been called. My son and his friend told me to get into the car quickly with them. We drove off.

The 2 men with the machete were out there somewhere and would obviously be waiting for the other guy they were after.

This happened in the middle of the afternoon, school was out and people shopping!
