Calling Planting Volunteers to Akoranga Reserve - one of the loveliest unknown treasures on the North Shore. Until recently it was a mass of weeds. However, a combination of two dedicated volunteers and two corporate teams (AMP and UL Ltd) have made incredible progress in wresting back this beautiful stream from environmental weeds. Come and join us to help progress the restoration effort! New volunteers welcome.

It calls sort of like a parrot and it's dark coloured, although I mostly see it … View moreHi - I keep seeing quite a large parrot type bird flying along the valley above Chelsea View Drive (I'm up on Balmain Road looking down) - it then heads off towards the primary school as far as I can tell. It calls sort of like a parrot and it's dark coloured, although I mostly see it almost in silouette, so can't see exactly what colour it is. I saw it today in profile as it flew and it's got a big hooked beak and it actually looked like a kea. Has anyone else seen it, or know if it belongs to someone or where it might have come from? There are no large pet birds listed as missing on the internet that match.
On doing a bit more research just now I wonder if it's a kaka. I hope someone can confirm!
