In the beautiful setting of the historic Bell house, meet Helen Paul-Smith (Tapuika/Ngaiterangi), co-founder of artisan tea blenders ŌKU.

In this informal talk, delve into a sensory world, exploring the flavours and remarkable healing properties of Aotearoa’s native plants. Many of these rākau (plants) have a rich history of traditional use, helping to maintain ora (well-being). Along with more familiar herbs and ingredients, plants such as Kawakawa, Kūmarahou, Mānuka, Houhere, Akeake, Horopito, and Karamū, feature in her teas, elixirs and balms. Many of the plants used are hand-harvested and sourced in the wild, following strict protocol; OKU is conscious of being good kaitiaki (guardians) of the Whenua (land) in this emerging industry, ensuring its sustainability. Helen was Māori Women’s Development Inc Businesswoman of the Year 2022 for Sales & Marketing.

The session ends with a Q&A and the chance to sample ŌKU tea served in the Village’s vintage fine china teacups. Event duration approx. 1 hour. Tickets include entry to explore Howick Historical Village.

Bookings are essential. Book via Eventfinda or email village@historicalvillage.org.nz.

Damaging gales were predicted to blow up to 110km/h, while strong wind watches are in place for nearly the entire North Island.

MetService said the gales could cause power cuts in Northland, Auckland and Waikato, with the highest winds on westerly coastlines likely to down trees.

- The Harbour Bridge is closed due to high gust winds.

Turkey the Bird – the band, not nation; Barry “Dr Rock” Jenkin, and a healthy dose of original Kiwi music are subject matter – citizens – on today’s She’ll Be Right on Saturdays Show with PJ Taylor, 3-7pm (NZ time, May 20) on East FM.
Taranaki-hard Turkey the Bird, the hugely-entertaining and musically charming folk trio who play all the guitar-family string instruments, and sing of life and the land, are at the tail-end of an “epic” 27-concert tour of the country.
We’ll be talking live with André Manella of Turkey the Bird at 4pm, and playing tracks from their great album WTF (When Turkeys Fly) in the lead-up to their only Auckland show on Saturday, May 27, at the Ministry of Folk, held at Auckland Guide Centre, 132 Grange Rd, Mt Eden. Tickets at www.turkeythebird.co.nz...
There have been tributes galore to Barry Jenkin these past days, and we’ll chip in with recollections of Dr Rock, the man of late-night gruff rock DJ persona, learned in his knowledge, sure of his convictions. He certainly guided a lot of us into exciting musical territories.
And because it’s NZ Music Month, we’re only playing Kiwi music on She’ll Be Right Shows in May.
Turkey the Bird: Andre Manella, originally of Switzerland, is on guitar, bass and percussion; Adrian Whelan, from Ireland, plays guitar, mandolin, bass and spoons; and Sol Bear Coulton, the Kiwi, sparkles on banjo and slide guitar.
East FM is East Auckland’s fair-dinkum community-powered public service radio station, on 88.1FM and 107.1FM on local frequencies, nationally and globally at www.eastfm.nz... and on app iHeart Radio.
She’ll Be Right - it’s all about the vibe; it’s all about the groove. And this Saturday, we’re talking Turkey – the Bird, and doing it for Dr Rock and Bruce Robertson. - PJ
