Housing MInister Chris Bishop sets 'long-term' price target of three to five times household incomes

Markus from Green Bay

I VERY much doubt the economic competence of the new government. First Seymour wants to move massive amounts of money from poor to rich, now Bishop lives in cloud kuckoo land. Median income is $66,200 per year in 2023, so 50% earn less, 50% more (sometimes MUCH more). 3-5 times of that is … View moreI VERY much doubt the economic competence of the new government. First Seymour wants to move massive amounts of money from poor to rich, now Bishop lives in cloud kuckoo land. Median income is $66,200 per year in 2023, so 50% earn less, 50% more (sometimes MUCH more). 3-5 times of that is $200,000-330,000. Even if they decide to give the land away for free you can’t build a house for that. And Bishop MUST know that. If they assume two full earners (aka the better off ones) it’s $400,000-660,000 for a house (including land) - which developer can provide that? So the government would need to build the houses - massively subsidised by the tax payer … which they don’t want to do.

So HOW can Bishop spout such nonsense???

From mortgages.co.nz...

In October 2023, BNZ published a report comparing New Zealand’s median section price, plus consented new-build cost, with the median price for an existing home each year. Using these median values, it has nearly always been more expensive to build, except for 2021-2022 when existing house prices rose sharply before falling again. As median building costs continued to rise into 2023 and 2024, building became significantly more expensive than buying an existing home.

✉️ Put a hold on your mail delivery if you’re going away
✉️ Provide clear delivery instructions for couriers to leave a package safely hidden or secured within your property
✉️ Install security cameras and/or security camera messaging near your letterbox or front of property
✉️ Where practical, consider click and collect over delivery
✉️ Send parcels to a work address or ensuring you're home when they arrive
✉️ Contact Police (111 for immediate issues or 105 if it is after the fact) if you see people loitering around vehicles or looking into car windows
✉️ Engage in neighbourhood groups so more people can keep an eye out for suspicious activity

These tips are being shared after a 44-year-old woman will appear in Pukekohe District Court on 28 March charged with theft.
An alleged mail thief in the Pukekohe area has hand-delivered herself into Police, following assistance from the community.
Counties Manukau South Senior Sergeant MJ Riddle says Police were aware of locals discussing a mail theft on social media. A report was made to Police at the time in January and had included enough detail including CCTV footage and a vehicle of interest. Following Police enquiries, the woman has brought herself into the Pukekohe Police Station a few days later

“This is a great result for the community and a timely reminder to the public to continue reporting any thefts from letterboxes.”
Senior Sergeant Riddle says
“Our community should be able to receive parcels and mail without concern of interference but unfortunately there are people in our communities who take advantage of opportunities to commit thefts from mail boxes and front porches."

“We encourage anyone who has been the victim of dishonesty offending to report it as soon as possible,” she says."

Auckland Council has proposed a move from weekly to fortnightly kerbside rubbish collections along with other measures in order to move closer to a zero-waste target by 2040.

The draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2024 (WWMP 2024) includes proposals to increase options to re-use, repair or re-purpose items and advocate for a rethink on how they are designed to extend their life span.
It also includes the targeting of construction and demolition waste, organic, plastics, packaging, textiles and biosolids, addressing litter and illegal dumping, and speeding up minimisation of waste generated by Auckland Council.
The draft WWMP 2024 outlines the "next important steps" to reduce waste and emissions, and cleaning up Auckland's waterways and environment, said chair of the planning, environment and parks committee Richard Hills.
"It builds on previous work undertaken by Auckland Council by doing more to keep resources in circulation and minimise harm caused by waste, while creating jobs and boosting the economy."
1.5 million tonnes of waste a year goes to landfill a year in Auckland, enough to fill Eden Park on a weekly basis. Without changes, this is expected to rise to at least 1.7 million tonnes annually by 2040.
Hills said that Aucklanders have shown their willingness to make changes toward a circular economy, acknowledging the efforts of young people in demanding action.

"Despite ambitious targets, we have seen steady progress in moving Tāmaki Makaurau towards this goal over the past decade, but it’s clear we can do more."
Auckland Council is also seeking feedback on a separate draft waste plan for the Hauraki Gulf Islands, which have their own unique waste management needs and challenges.
Aucklanders have until March 28 to have their say on the draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) 2024 and the Draft Hauraki Gulf Islands Waste Plan 2024.
