Want to control weeds easily, build up healthy live soil, or restore wild ecology to a part of your garden?

Tuition, site-specific advice and ongoing guidance are part of the service we offer.

In fact, it is essential that we explain the North Shore Wilds methodology to all new clients before we undertake any work for them, to make sure it meets their needs.

So our first visit to a new client's garden or premises usually takes an hour or longer, learning what the client is aiming for, offering our assessment of the situation and solutions, describing what they are likely to see if we undertake the work, and answering their general and specific questions about plant identification, stormwater management, erosion, or weed control.

If a small group of neighbours would like to share the costs of a site-specific demonstration and education session at a location and time that suits all the group, get in touch and we would be delighted to facilitate it, with follow-up sessions if wanted. (Thanks to Neighbourly member Katherine Boys for this suggestion).

Let us know if there is a shared interest, eg how to control a certain type of weed, or preventing erosion.

For example, weed vines, Tradescantia, and kikuyu are common requests we are very happy to give a focused training session on.

Hi,
I want to make people aware of my new garden/vegetation management service, primarily consisting of chemical-free weed-control, ie handweeding ( including hand tools where needed) for ecological restoration, ie turning a weedy mish-mash into intact plant communities native to our local forests, forest edges, streamsides and wetlands.

I produce self-managing wild plant communities free of environmental weeds, using detailed knowledge of our locally native plants at all stages from seeds and seedlings through to maturity, including trees, shrubs, herbs, vines, groundcovering creepers, grasses and mosses, so I very rarely need to buy or plant anything.

The service is aimed at those with a bit of rough land, who are aware of the potential beauty of restoration but can't do it all themselves.

So, how to find those people and let them know I am available to do the work or show them how?

I have done a few letter-box flyer drops, trying to reach the neighbourhoods around natural Reserves, but most mailboxes (like my own:) say "No junk mail" or similar.

To make promotion even more challenging, there isn't even a name for this sort of service for private properties, as it hasn't existed until now, as far as I know. I call it "Chemical-free weed control for ecological restoration", but it also involves landscaping and soil care.... improving soil structure, making sustainable paths, tidying up the surrounding area, etc, as required.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Then I was introduced to a Graeme Dingle Foundation programme for young people that need a boost in life. It helped me build my self-confidence and social skills.

We were paired with a mentor, my mentor Tony believed in me like no one else. Because of him I stayed in school, went to university and now have a full time job.

Ever wanted to know more about the ecology of your garden? Or even just what some of the plants are?

We live in the midst of thousands of species of plants, and that's just the ones that are big enough to see!

Many are frequently mistaken for other, better-known species. "Dark nightshade" and "American nightshade" are both native to NZ and a valuable part of sunlit forest margin revegetation, attracting honeybees. Both these native species are usually mistaken for the common weed "Black nightshade", which itself is often mistakenly referred to as "Deadly nightshade", causing needless worry.

Once recognised, native grasses, sedges and mosses that emerge wild in our gardens can be nurtured to form a beautiful self-maintaining ground cover, keeping out the true weeds. This is especially effective between tiles and in cracked paving.
Near streams or runoff channels, conserving these wild plants is often the fastest and cheapest way to prevent erosion and improving water quality, as is well-recognised in stormwater policies.

Weed tree seedlings can be identified at 2cm high and uprooted in a second, rather than growing up to become troublesome and expensive pest plants, taking over the garden, some even needing to be felled by arborists. Brush wattles can grow to several metres high in a very few years.

Moth plant seedlings quickly become deep-rooted vines with toxic sap, invisibly sneaking behind and through shrubbery, hedges, trees and fences until removal becomes a big job.

As part of restoring local gardens, forests, streams and wetlands, we have learned to use the scientific plant identification process and the "Citizen Science" community to identify any plants, and many insects, we don't recognise.

We recognise the challenges faced by busy homeowners trying to manage weeds in the soil conditions commonly encountered in North Shore neighbourhoods.

In a one-hour visit we will identify your native and weed plants, assess your soil quality and weed control strategies, and offer new, chemical-free solutions if needed.
