Two lanes on the Auckland Harbour Bridge were closed for a period on Sunday, as cyclists took over two northbound lanes.
The rally was organised by Bike Auckland, which is calling for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency to allocate one of the structure’s eight lanes to cyclists for three months over summer, when traffic is at its quietest.
Bike Auckland chairwoman Barb Cuthbert said securing a way across the Waitematā Harbour for cyclists was “the most important cycling issue in Auckland”.
But NZTA spokesman Brett Gliddon said making traffic lanes on the Harbour Bridge available to cyclists in the short term was “not as simple as some advocates imply”.
“The bridge was not designed for a walking and cycling function, and there are true and genuine safety and wider network issues that need to be worked through and balanced,” he said.
What do you think: Should Waka Kotahi NZTA allow a cycle lane trial over the Auckland Harbour Bridge? Vote in the poll below or share your thoughts in the comments.

If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you! The Homed team is giving you the opportunity to show us the home you've retired to and tell us why you love it. If you haven't quite left your career behind and you're planning your retirement we want to hear about it on Stuff Nation.
Remember - this doesn't have to be a one off. You can ask your neighbours for business recommendations for DIY products, advice on home improvement or even to invite your neighbours over for a house warming when your forever home is completed.
To share your thoughts and photos with Stuff head to the Stuff Nation page, we prefer submissions between 350-800 words; otherwise email homed@stuff.co.nz.

“Lane capacity on Birkdale and Salisbury – the kerb buildouts on Birkdale Road opposite Salisbury Road reinforce broken yellow lines on Birkdale Road and stops vehicles from undertaking vehicles turning right into Salsibury Road. This is designed to slow operating speeds approaching the school crossing on Birkdale Road and increase intersection safety.”
SO WHEN YOU ARE WAITING TO TURN RIGHT INTO SALISBURY RD, VEHICLES CAN NOT PASS – SO BACK UP BEHIND YOU. NOW WE, AND THOSE WAITING BEHIND US, HAVE THE GREATLY INCREASED RISK OF BEING CRASHED INTO FROM THOSE COMING DOWN BIRKDALE ROAD!! BEING USED AS A HUMAN SPEED REDUCING ROAD BLOCK.

Hi Neighbours, Auckland Council is winding up the citywide revaluation of all properties, as a basis for carving up next year's rate's pie. Analysis for Stuff shows cheaper suburbs, especially the south may face higher than average rate rises in July 2022. How will you fare?

Without prior scientific observation as to what was occurring. Involving and informing as few people as possible. Promoting kids playing next to moving vehicles. We came up with NOat signs to encourage better solutions and consultation. (please note that a placed sign means we have permission to place and the view of the property is independent although generally supporting.) Suggestions about what AT should do, should be sent to AT - but do not expect any response. Calling it a Trial is not an excuse for the manner it has been done. All the information you get is vague. And there is no option to be against this. Decide if this is how you want your future roading solutions to be.

The Voices for Freedom leaflet, delivered in the Northcote and Birkenhead areas on the North Shore, included eight points that cast doubt on the safety or efficacy of the vaccine.
Auckland University vaccinologist and associate professor Helen Petousis-Harris recently discredited the leaflet.
Halbert said he got five complaints from locals who had received the leaflet in their mailboxes this week.
“It’s disappointing people are actively trying to spread misinformation around our community and prey on people who are vaccination hesitant already.”
He believed the leaflet had been designed to scaremonger locals and delivered to align with the opening of the North Shore’s first vaccination clinic in the Highbury Shopping Centre on Monday.
“This is a direct action on their behalf to undermine our local vaccine centre and to stop our local people from going in and being immunised.”

I have started a petition to ask Auckland Council to rethink the rates increases. They are very high and are going to ultimately disadvantage our city economically, and have the potential to add to poverty for our most vulnerable.
To make this happen we are going to need every single possible signature and share to gather a large enough voice to be heard.
Would love you support, please sign and share. Let's make our voice heard and challenge our council to make decisions that are better for our community.

Kohimarama resident Mary Trautvetter was house-sitting for friends in Castor Bay on the North Shore on April 14 when her dog, Rocky, was frightened by thunder and ran off.
The little white maltese and lhasa apso cross has been lost ever since.
“I’m just in pieces,” Trautvetter said, adding that Rocky had helped her through some tough life events, including a mental breakdown and a divorce.
She has even consulted with psychic mediums in a desperate attempt for information. Red Beach-based psychic medium Kerry-Marie Callander told Stuff she believes it is possible someone has taken Rocky in.
The person might not be on social media or know that people are looking for the dog, she said, adding that perhaps mainstream media – like the local newspaper – might be the best way to reach them.
Click 'read more' for the full report. Please contact Mary Trautvetter at soinsvisage@gmail.com if you have any information regarding Rocky's whereabouts.
