The service will provide a world-class level of assessment, diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment for people with breast… View moreA newly developed facility, renamed as Kia Ū Ora – Waitematā Breast Service, was opened today at North Shore Hospital to improve access and health outcomes for patients.
The service will provide a world-class level of assessment, diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment for people with breast cancer and breast disorders.
Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for women in the Waitematā DHB catchment which has the largest population of any DHB in the country.
Patients have previously attended various appointments at a number of different locations across the DHB during the course of their diagnosis,
treatment and post-operative care.
“This co-located approach will be hugely convenient for our patients and will, in certain cases, mean various needs can be met on one day and in one place,” said Waitematā DHB CEO Dr Dale Bramley.
“Most importantly, it will contribute to improved diagnosis and treatment times – helping us make a dramatic difference in the lives of our patients, their families and whānau.”
The modern new unit occupies a vast ground floor space that has been completely redeveloped since its previous occupants were relocated to upgraded premises elsewhere.
It includes additional ultrasound and mammogram capability – as well as extra consultation rooms in a reconfigured and refurbished easy-to-access premises.
Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is a major supporter of the project and had representatives present during today’s opening.
“Our $1 million contribution towards Kia Ū Ora is recognition of just how important this service is,” said Breast Cancer Foundation NZ chair Justine Smyth.
“It’s crucial that everyone who is referred by their GP to the service is seen quickly so that any breast cancer found can be treated as early as possible, giving the best chance of survival.
“Going through a cancer assessment is hugely worrying and women shouldn’t have to face unnecessary delays."
Attending the opening are Waitematā DHB CEO Dr Dale Bramley, Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand board chair Justine Smyth, Waitematā DHB board chair Professor Judy McGregor, Dr Susan Gerred.

Police are seeking an alcohol ban in a bid to prevent possible incidents of disorder near an upcoming music festival featuring Benee and Fat Freddy's Drop.
Waitematā Local Board will vote next Tuesday on whether to adopt a temporary alcohol ban for the Outerfields 2021 festival held at Western Springs Stadium on March 6.
Auckland City District Police senior sergeant Geoff Medland wrote to Auckland Council chief executive officer Jim Stabback on January 21 requesting the ban, which would apply to areas surrounding the venue, rather than at the venue itself.

What do you think about the newly announced festival on Motutapu?
Island Time on Motutapu is a festival to be held over the last weekend in February and is set to feature a smorgasbord of food and drink vendors and music artists.
Festival-goers will be treated to a day long festival on either February 27 or 28 on the island. Tickets range from between $65 to $85, with a portion of ticket sales going towards to wildlife conservation.
Billy Brown, the deputy chairman of Ngāi Tai Ki Tamaki, said that it is an excellent opportunity to showcase the culture of the island and for them to educate visitors about volunteer opportunities on Motutapu.
“In the end, we want a calendar of events on the island, covering sports, arts, food – all of it," he said.

The plea follows an apparent spike in valuable purebred dogs being stolen around the country.
Chief executive officer Debra Ashton said SAFE had seen a rise in the number of stolen pedigree pooches reported on social media.
“It's cruelty in the highest degree both for the animals and for the families that are having their dogs stolen.
“This is completely unacceptable and the community together needs to fight against it.”
Ashton recommends people go to animal charities which are “screaming out” for good loving homes instead of buying expensive pedigrees from “puppy mills”.
This could help to “nip the theft business in the bud” by reducing demand, she said.
Ashton urged people to be aware of animals being stolen for dog fighting to speak out, and to question new pet owners about where they got their pedigrees.
The price of puppies is believed to be skyrocketing due to more demand after the Covid-19 lockdown.
“I’ve heard figures of around $4000 to $8000 which is phenomenal for purchasing a dog,” Ashton said.
Cavoodle puppies – a hybrid of a cavalier king charles spaniel and a poodle – are selling on Trade Me for $6000, golden retriever puppies for $4000 and Dobermans for $3000 a pup.
Trade Me has seen 28,000 searches for puppies in the last week - a 34 per cent jump on the same time last year.
