Make a Plan - to keep your family safe

Cathy McIntosh from Waitematā Local Board

The 7.5 magnitude earthquake near Culverden earlier this week has got people thinking about what to do to be safe in an emergency.

The most important thing that you can do for yourself and your family is to take the time to sit down and talk about what you would do in an emergency. Go to www.happens.nz... where you can make a plan to help with these discussions.

Here’s a summary of what you should do. Firstly, talk with your family and decide what you will all do in the case of an emergency.

- If you can’t get home – where will you meet?
- Who will pick up the kids?
- What will you do if you can’t get hold of each other?
- Who else do you need to help?

Involve your kids in these discussions, talk to your neighbours or your wider family. It’s important that everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

You should also prepare for situations including:

- having no water
- having no power
- having to leave in a hurry.

Most emergency items will already be in your home, perhaps now is a good time to check that you all know where they are and that they are in working order or there is enough for 3-4 days. Check:

- radio and torch
- phone and charger
- first aid kit and family medicines – such as a spare asthma inhaler
- food and a means to cook

- pet food
- important documents like passports
- water
- toilet paper
- blankets and spare clothing, including sturdy footwear (in case you are evacuated during the night)
- make sure you have thought of all family members - a dummy or a child’s teddy may come in handy.

Disasters can strike at any place at any time and the best defence is to be prepared. Go to www.happens.nz...

Poll: Do you think banning gang patches is reasonable?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

With the government cracking down on gangs, it is now illegal for gang members to display their insignia in public places whether through clothing or their property.

This means arrests can be made if these patches are worn in places like restaurants, shops, on public transport or ferries, and on airplanes. Arrests were made recently at a funeral.

Do you think this ban is reasonable?
