The 450-tonne shield of City Rail Link’s tunnel boring machine is now fronting Mt Eden's tunnel portal.

It took one and a half painstaking hours to move the machine 500 metres.

The shield was shifted from the Mt Eden site's western edge by a truck towing a hydraulic trailer fitted with 15 axles and 250 wheels.

"It was a very big and delicate operation but many hours of planning and all our hard work on site has paid dividends for us,” said Link Alliance project director Francois Dudouit.

The next phase will be putting everything together, he said.

The shield would be put inside the first 50 metres of the tunnel and connected to the tunnel boring machine's factory, Dudouit said.

This comprises eleven sections which provide hydraulic, mechanical and electrical power to excavate the tunnels and install precast concrete segments to line the tunnels.

When all the gantries are connected, the machine will undergo extensive commissioning tests before excavating the first of the twin tunnels in late April.

The Link Alliance will operate the machine to the new Karangahape Station then to Aotea Station in Auckland's CBD where it will join tunnels already built from Britomart Station and under lower Albert St.

City Rail Link's 3.45 kilometre-long tunnels are earmarked to open in late 2024.

EREBUS Memorial / Dove Myer Robinson Park - NOT THE RIGHT SITE

Come down and see just how big and ugly the Erebus Monument would be if it goes ahead. We are camping there in protest - please come and join us. We have been sitting on the gentle slope below the 180-year-old Pohutukawa (which will be trimmed back if this goes ahead) watching the Americas Cup racing out on the Waitemata. If the monument goes ahead there, we will lose a beautiful sheltered spot with views to Rangitoto and the Waitemata harbour. This is not the right site for this monstrosity and we need support in numbers! Please go to www.sosnz.org.nz... / @ProtectMataharehare to sign the Petition - this whole process has been done behind closed doors! Families have come and told us of the many years of memories picnicing down there and all remember the magnificent Pohutukawa throughout the years. If left to grow, it could survive another 800 years or more!!! Don't let them trim it back to accommodate their 'work' -- and other trees will be removed all together! Come on down and learn all about what is planned for this site! Note the pole in the foreground of picture - the large concrete and metal monument will go to this height! Help us stop it!

The city’s heterogeneous nature is the crux of the Auckland War Memorial Museum’s latest exhibition, Tāmaki Herenga Waka: Stories of Auckland.

It tells the diverse narratives of the people and places that call the city home, with a particular focus on early immigrant families who had – and continue to have – a fundamental impact on its formation.

The Kronfeld family, who moved to Auckland in the 1890s, have had a particularly trailblazing existence.

In as little as 10 years after moving, Prussian Jew Gustav Kronfeld boasted a hugely successful import-export business and had become a naturalised member of the British Empire.

Along with his Samoan wife Louisa he also helped care for those who passed through Auckland from the Pacific Islands, in a grand house he had built himself.

Emily Parr, the Kronfeld’s great-great-granddaughter said her ancestors' warm and familial hospitality helped countless travellers and established Pacific Island roots in Auckland, at a time when very few Samoans were in New Zealand.
