Hi neighbours!

New Zealanders from farms, factories and schools around the country are showcasing messages of support for Aucklanders trapped in lockdown.

The initiative is being driven by Kia Kaha Auckland, a group aiming to support communities and regions who continue to be disadvantaged by the impacts of Covid-19.

Group spokesperson Lee Astridge said it was a way to show Auckland the rest of the country was thinking of them and wishing them strength in adversity.

“We’re a bunch of rural people who believe that stepping up and showing we care for everyone in New Zealand ultimately gives the country the best chance to thrive,” he said.

Here’s a clip of some of the messages, let us know what you think in the comments!

Auckland Museum is calling on the public submit personal messages they have received in their life about love, loss and longing.

Letters, texts, postcards and even Tinder messages Aucklanders have sent to one another will be compiled into an upcoming exhibition in mid-2021.

Auckland Museum spokesperson Nina Finigan said the exhibition will explore the ways Aucklanders communicate feelings of love, loss, and longing, and how that has changed and stayed the same over time.

“Love, loss and longing – these feelings are universal and reveal something profound about what it means to be human,” she said.

“How we communicate these emotions continues to evolve but our need to tell people we love and miss them is timeless.”

Submissions can be anything from a love letter physically received in the mail, an email from a friend overseas, an affectionate card from a family member or messages from a Tinder profile.

They can focus on love lost in the form of a breakup message, a letter from someone disclosing profound grief, or a letter that takes on new meaning after the sender has passed away.

Family stories where letters or messages played a key part, or letters that have been passed down in your family, are also welcomed for submission.

"We acknowledge that such messages are highly personal. We are committed to ethical use and display of personal stories and will work alongside submitters to ensure their stories are treated with care, sensitivity and respect,” Finigan said.

To submit items for consideration please send a photo, scan or screen grab of the letter, email or message history to submissions@aucklandmuseum.com

Submissions close Sunday 13 September.

A healthy female baby rhino has been born at Auckland Zoo.

The southern white rhino calf was delivered on August 14, and it marks the first rhino birth at the zoo in 20 years.

Auckland Zoo ungulates team leader Tommy Karlsson witnessed the “exciting and nerve-wracking” birth that has been heavily anticipated by staff.

“It was very smooth and very fast, and Jamila did a brilliant job by giving a couple of really good pushes to get her baby here,” he said.

“Her calf was walking within 25 minutes and suckling well by the afternoon. She’s pretty sturdy, her belly is filling out and she’s already getting a lot rounder.”

Karlsson estimates the baby rhino’s weight at 65 kilograms.

The rhino’s mother Jamila went through a 16 month pregnancy and one hour of labour, with her water breaking at 7am and the delivery of her calf occurring at 7.59am.

Regional Facilities Auckland chief executive Chris Brooks said it is a rare and exiting privilege welcoming a new baby rhino.

“Auckland Zoo supports the recovery of rhino populations in Zimbabwe and in Sumatra,” he said.

“Thanks to the Australasian zoos’ breeding programme, we have been able to bring one more southern white rhino into the world.”

Karlsson said it is still early days, and Jamila and her calf are not yet out on the Savannah.

“We take Jamila’s lead to do this at the pace she is comfortable with, and once she’s ready, we can’t wait for visitors to see Jamila’s calf for themselves,” he said.

“Rhino are such an incredible species that are still doing it tough in the wild, both in Africa and Asia. They are so important in helping maintain healthy ecosystems for themselves and many other species where they live, so we need to do all we can to help ensure their future.”

Since 2013, Auckland Zoo has supported the Zimbabwe-based Lowveld Rhino Trust’s (LRT) conservation efforts for both black and white rhino species.
