Ashburton District Council has been notified by the Mid-South Canterbury Rural Fire Authority that there is a total fire ban for the district effective immediately.

All open fires, including field burnoffs, are now banned throughout the district.

With fire resources stretched as volunteer fire crews are assisting the efforts with the Port Hills fires in Selwyn and Christchurch, Ashburton residents and farmers are being reminded of the fire risks in the dry weather and are being told to refrain from any open fires.

Environmental Services Group Manager Jane Donaldson says it is imperative that people are aware of the dangers and not put any further strain on our fire brigades and volunteers, many of whom are working long shifts to help out in the Port Hills.

“People need to use their common sense and ensure they are not undermining the efforts in fighting the fires happening in the Port Hills” she says, adding, “if we have any fires started here it will mean redirecting the already stretched resources and will likely result in prosecutions.”

Council will advise once the fire ban is lifted.

Hello All,

Update on the Port Hills fire

The fire at this stage is largely contained but not yet controlled. The fire area is not expanding and firefighters have made great progress in putting in fire breaks around the perimeter of the fire area.

Today we have diggers working in several areas to create fire breaks. In those areas that diggers can’t access we’re focusing on dropping fire retardant to stop the spread of the fire.

There’s still a lot of dry vegetation and areas of extreme heat within the fire ground, so there’s still a very real risk of flare-ups – especially with forecast north-east winds of up to 50km today.

A total fire ban is in place in Selwyn, and in the region from South Canterbury to Hurunui. The fire ban includes a ban on all stubble fires. Authorities have put the fire ban in place because of the number of firefighting resources from around Canterbury involved in the Port Hills fire. This means that resources are limited for responding to other fires. We hope residents appreciate the severity of the situation and take extra care with outdoor activities to avoid further fires. The fire ban is expected to be reviewed when conditions change.

We would like to stress the request that people please stay well away from the area of the fires.

Lincoln Event Centre is not operating as a welfare centre.

No further donated goods or offers of accommodation are required at this stage. We appreciate the offers but please don't ring any of the authorities to offer goods or services.

Information and updates for Selwyn residents will be posted on the council website and on Facebook as required. Residents can also check the Christchurch City Council Newsline ccc.govt.nz... for the latest information.

We would like to thank all firefighters both on the ground and in the air, especially the volunteer firefighters who have taken time off work to contribute to the effort.

Christchurch Metro customer update - Thurs 16 Feb

We are not expecting any change to those detours overnight unless emergency authorities lift road closures. Detailed information is below. We thank all our customers for your patience and understanding during this time.

Our Real Time Information systems continue to be affected by the fire and a number of buses are unable to be tracked. This means some buses will not show in our "next bus" online tools and most bus finders displaying the ETA's of buses on street will not work. It is likely that our systems will be affected for a number of days and we ask that if your bus does not appear on "next bus" tools that you use the bus timetables instead. Metro thank all fire fighters for their hard work and dedication to keeping our communities safe.

As of Thursday 16 February two bus services are affected by the fire, they are;
- Blue Line - all trips will end at Princess Margaret Hospital, no trips will travel to Cashmere Hill
- 145 Westmorland - Eastgate - all trips will end and start their trips on Rose St until further notice.

This puts it into perspective a little - just what our emergency services - and our neighbours - are facing. Kia kaha.
