Dumping town slogan review a missed opportunity for Ashburton, councillor says

From local democracy reporter Adam Burns:
Ditching plans for a new town slogan misses the chance for Ashburton to improve its national image, which β€œis arguably not the best”, a district councillor says.

The district's ridiculed 'Whatever it Takes' slogan was considered for a review for β€œongoing relevance” following suggestions put forward by local residents earlier this year.

In response, the Ashburton District Council unanimously agreed that the slogan needed to be discarded, the matter being picked up by national media as a result.

But cost and fear of further derision has seemingly scared most of the elected members off developing a replacement.

At its meeting held via Zoom on Wednesday, the council moved a recommendation to dispense with the use of slogans in its marketing efforts and instead β€œtell stories about our place, our people and our activities”.

Councillor Carolyn Cameron called the recommendation β€œnegative thinking” and believed it would be a missed opportunity.

β€œI would be disappointed if we did not endeavour to improve our image nationally, which is arguably not the best,” she said.

β€œYou cannot measure the value of a slogan, a slogan is about the people that live in the district, getting behind a brand and a belief and having pride in their community.”

Did you know 1 in 4 New Zealand adults will suffer from a mental disorder or distress at some point in their lives? When they do, let’s make sure they don’t have to go it alone. To create safer, more caring communities we need to not only look after ourselves but those around us as well.

For the month of September, we want to come together to share ways to boost mental health and well-being. For example, you could host an online catch up or quiz, call a neighbour who lives alone, challenge your family and friends to try a new hobby or move your body more to improve your own well-being. If you or someone you know is going through a rough patch, don’t forget you can call or text 1737 anytime for free support from a trained counsellor.

Want to share your thoughts? Let us know how you’re looking out for your well-being and helping others with theirs this month by tagging us in your social media posts or emailing us your photos, videos, or experiences to: info@neighbourhoodsupport.co.nz
