Rural water users challenge Kaikōura council plans to treat their water

Water supply users say the Kaikōura District Council should have talked to them before coming up with expensive plans to treat their bore water.

Like councils around the country, the council is upgrading water supplies to meet the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards before the government's new water regulator Taumata Arowai takes over next year.

Council operations manager Dave Clibbery has recommended splitting the East Coast scheme in two, building a $100,000 treatment plant for Clarence and having farms switch to rainwater for domestic use, at their own expense.

The East Coast scheme supplies 21 rural properties and 13 households in Clarence village, with the bulk of the water used for stock.

The bore supply has never been known to cause illness in its 44-year history.

But the Ministry of Health considers no bores safe after the 2016 Havelock North contamination episode in which 5000 people became ill and four died, and the area is on a boil water notice.

A spokesman for the East Coast water users, Bob Todhunter, said members of the scheme had not been consulted on their views.

Reno blogging saved one couple $35k... but it didn't come cheap

I've always thought of reno blogging as a way to document a difficult process in a fun, relatable way. The benefit? Emotional support and maybe advice from folks following your journey - and maybe a little ego bump from showing off your mad wallpapering skills.
If you're lucky, and good, you might be given a couple of cans of paint from your local hardware store, to help you on the way - but that would be the icing on the tip of the social media cake.
Few of us would have the energy or knowhow to turn their reno into a part time side hustle that's both creatively fulfilling, and engaging.
But that's exactly what Moochstyle's Shayden and Georgia Whipps have done - with some pawsome help from their gorgeous dog Frankie. They've been blogging their Christchurch villa reno since they bought their home and Shayden shared their story with us for the final episode of First Rung, our podcast. A first time homeowner and renovator, Shayden is such an inspiring guy to chat with. He makes you want to jump in and give it go. Check out his story and let us know what you think.

Hi Canterbury,

Addington Raceway was a sell-out for the annual New Zealand Trotting Cup, the most prestigious and richest harness racing event in the country.

With the event attracting racegoers around Aotearoa, officials agree that this race has a positive impact on the local economy. On the other side, animal rights activists SAFE states that using horses for sport puts immense pressure on a horse's anatomy and that the sport should not be continued.

Do you think horse racing should be banned?

Amaria Emery, of Kaiapoi in North Canterbury, is one of just 10 children in New Zealand with CDKL5 – a neurological condition that means she is missing a protein needed for brain development.

Parents they spoke to encouraged them to get her into intensive therapy, and the family tries to visit the Timmermans Method Therapy Clinic in Adelaide once or twice a year, finances permitting. There, Amaria receives three-hour one-on-one therapy sessions a day for three weeks, and while exhausting for her, the results are paying off.

The Emerys said the main hope for Amaria was to get her walking, something they work on with her through her therapy exercises each day. They are optimistic of a medical answer for the condition in the future.

But their immediate goal is to conquer a half-marathon in Queenstown later this month – a challenge they have been trying to get over the line for some time. A Givealittle page has been set up for anyone wanting to support the runners, and in turn Amaria’s family which includes sisters Arabella, 8, and Alessandra, 7.
