Mangere Mountain Education Centre (MMEC) is a not-for-profit organisation located at the foot of Mangere Mountain and is an initiative unlike any other presently in existence in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We are passionate about restoring, re-enacting and reinforcing the cultural heritage and history of the Mountain and its local iwi, Te Wai-o-Hua. We also provide an overview of New Zealand’s geology by comparing oral tradition with scientific theory and talking about some of the legends associated with Auckland’s volcanoes particularly Mangere Mountain and it’s geological features. We do this by way of providing guided walks of Mangere Mountain and hands-on workshops to school groups and casual visitors of all ages.
