Punakaiki visitor site redevelopment continues at pace

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

From local democracy reporter Brendon McMahon:

Work continues apace to erect laminated timber and metal elements for the striking new building at the centre of the $26 million redevelopment of the Pancake Rocks visitor site.

Much of the Department of Conservation Experience Centre is now encased in plastic wrap to protect it and enable the contractors to continue working throughout the winter.

The redevelopment includes a new 4.2 km-long pedestrian and cycle path through Punakaiki.

Other assets being redeveloped in the project are the northern car park with an extension for camper van parking, improved pedestrian access to the Pancake Rocks, and new toilets.

The project arose from the provincial growth fund, with a condition that the completed building will be gifted to Ngāti Waewae to own and manage. Completion is expected in early 2024.

The site receives up to 500,000 visitors annually as one of the most visited DOC visitor sites on the West Coast.
