Local so keen for Medallion Drive extension to open, they unofficially opened it themself

Caroline Williams Reporter from North Harbour News

Kia ora neighbours. A local was so keen for the Medallion Drive extension road to open, they snuck out at night and unofficially opened it themself.

Auckland Transport has been working on a $10 million extension to Medallion Drive in Albany on the North Shore since June 2020.

The project was expected to be complete by mid-2021, however it is now expected to open in early April, an Auckland Transport spokeswoman confirmed.

Locals on social media recently questioned why the Medallion Drive link road had not yet opened, as it had looked completed for several weeks, with minimal activity from contractors.

On Friday night, some locals got an exclusive preview, when someone took it upon themself to remove the barriers and unofficially open the road.

Auckland Transport have labelled this person's actions as "dangerous".

Smoke in Mt Wellington

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

Smoke has been seen coming from the crater of the Auckland maunga Mt Wellington.

Images of the smoke began appearing on social media on Friday afternoon.

Around 1.45pm, Fire and Emergency (Fenz) shift manager Josh Pennefather told the NZ Herald a crew was fighting a fire of about 60 square metres in size.
”It’s spreading up hill … [but] there’s no property at risk at this stage,” Pennefather said.

Six fire trucks were in attendance working to contain a grass fire that's spreading up the maunga.

A helicopter was on its way to assist firefighting efforts, he added.

At 2pm, Pennefather shared that the fire was contained and they were working to extinguish it, including “keeping an eye on a whole bunch of hot spots“.
