Seafood Delight
One of the most famous seafood spots in New Zealand is Kaikoura. In Maori, the word ‘Kai’ means food and ‘Koura’ means crayfish – so it’s not hard to guess what Kaikoura is famous for!
Kaikoura is a coastal town on the South Island of New Zealand. It’s known for its abundant wildlife and its sperm whale population. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway winds from the town centre to lookout points at Point Kean. Close by, the rock platforms are home to a colony of New Zealand fur seals. The 1800s Fyffe House is a cottage built on a foundation of whalebones, with displays on the town’s whaling past.
Feast on fresh crayfish from one of the many ‘Seafood Caravans’ that dot the highways surrounding Kaikoura. The most famous is Nin’s Bin, run by a local family who have been selling crayfish here since 1977. Located 20 minutes North of Kaikoura township Nin’s Bin is a favourite with the locals. Sitting on the beach devouring crayfish cooked with garlic and butter and looking out to the Pacific Ocean.
