Historic Chinese market garden settlement to be restored

Nicole Mathewson Reporter from The Press

The Ng King Brothers Chinese Market Garden in Ashburton operated from the early 1920s until 1964.

However, it was more than a business, becoming a settlement where Chinese were offered employment, company and education. By the late 1940s, it had about 12 houses and at least 80 residents.

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga listing advisor Robyn Burgess said it had outstanding significance as the last remaining example of a 20th century Chinese market garden settlement in New Zealand.

The buildings will be retained as true to their original appearance as possible to enable the visitor to imagine life on the settlement 100 years ago.
