Thousands gather for day of Celtic celebration at 10th Hororata Highland Games
Cantabrians donned their kilts and grabbed their bagpipes for a day of Celtic fun, at this year’s Hororata Highland Games.
Now in its 10th year, the event is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and Saturday’s games proved no exception – attracting 8500 spectators to the rural Canterbury town.
From the caber toss to the pie-eating contest, 570 competitors went head-to-head across the range of events.
And opening the proceedings was Hororata Clan chieftain John de Vries, who said the day was a celebration of Kiwi and Scottish culture.
With borders closed due to Covid-19 there were no international entrants, ensuring Kiwis competitors took centre stage.
Among them was Craig Manson, who won the men’s championship, and Siositina Hakeai, who won the women’s trophy.
Band of the Day was the Canterbury Caledonian Grade 3 band, while The Average Joe’s took the Men’s Southfuels Tug O’ War for the third year in a row. Team Fulton Hogan won the mixed event.
Students from Hororata Primary School won the Harraways Junior Warriors and the Champion Highland Dancer was Danielle Joy.
