Restaurant owner says locals want to keep it named after alleged rapist Bully Hayes
Akaroa’s Bully Hayes restaurant intends to change its name in October and while some locals are against the change, others say they'll support whatever the owner does.
In June this year, academic Scott Hamilton criticised the Canterbury restaurant and bar, saying the name was "a tribute to the most notorious of all the Pacific's slave traders", William ‘Bully’ Hayes.
Owner Wayne Jones says he's now trialling four names suggested by friends for a few weeks at a time: Jonesy’s, Hilly Bays, Wayne’s World, and Bully Stays.
What do you think? Should the restaurant's name change and, if yes, what should the new name be? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
