Safer City Centre Speeds are Here! Ka Rawe!

CCRG from Auckland City Centre Residents' Group - CCRG

Today is arguably one of the most significant for our city centre public space - streets - since, well since the speed limits we have inherited were put in place - which were basically a one speed fits all 50 kph, and over engineered streets prioritising speed and movement of vehicles, that have enabled much higher and unsafe speeds, and led to hostile streets and intersections, deaths and serious injuries for anyone vulnerable i.e not in a vehicle.

Today that starts to change, and we have slower safer speeds introduced into our city centre, almost all 30kph or below, not just for the 10's of thousands of people who call this place home, but for the 500,000 trips all people who share this space make walking, cycling and scooting in the city centre, every day.

There's been a whole lot of strong advocates for this, joining CCRG in getting this across the line as allies for a safer, more people-friendly city centre.

It's a very significant step in implementing the vision of the City Centre MasterPlan, and Access for Everyone, things that will enable a healthier city - cleaner air, more trees, streets we can meet people in, and linger safely in.

Good for residents, businesses, visitors, the environment and so much more. Today is the start of something new for the city centre. Ka Rawe everyone who made this happen.
