Karamea residents split over fate of historic rātā trees
A West Coast council will chop down four 300-year-old rātā trees to make way for a $400,000 stopbank.
The West Coast Regional Council has said the trees must go so work can be done on the northern Buller town's stopbank, despite the majority of ratepayers voting against the upgrade.
Resident Ray Douglas said the rata trees were about three centuries old and should not be cut down. The stopbank was built around the trees in the 1930s, but the council now wanted to upgrade it and remove the trees.
