Suspicious fire blocked entry to Canterbury township
Concerns about emergency access to a large Canterbury township have been raised after fire blocked the main entry for about two hours.
More than 2500 residents live in Pegasus – a standalone township off State Highway 1 near Woodend in North Canterbury – but they were blocked from entering or leaving as firefighters battled a suspicious blaze at the highway intersection on Wednesday evening.
An emergency exit road that opened eventually was described by emergency services staff as "not ideal".
