Is it time for reservable family-friendly huts?
There are several "family-friendly" huts in the parks surrounding Nelson but they aren't so family-friendly if you turn up with cranky kids and they are full. Of course you can 'squeeze in' or grab a spot on the floor but it is also possible that a hut with 24 beds could have 50 people turn up...that is a problem.
On the weekend (March 17) we went to the Lakehead Hut in Nelson Lakes. Initially we were headed to the Coldwater hut but we were told by someone at the visitor centre that she knew of one party of 9 (with many pre-schoolers) that had taken a water taxi there already that morning meaning there were only 3 beds left and it was a very popular hut. She told us Lakehead was a better bet. We left early in the morning but it turned out not early enough as we arrived to a full hut and we knew there were more families coming down the track behind us. It wasn't a problem but it could have been if there were an additional 20 people still to arrive, which although perhaps unlikely is certainly possible.
In the summer our family booked spots in Abel Tasman huts using their reservation service and it worked like a charm. With this system in place for some huts I can't image why they wouldn't use it more extensively, especially for the more popular family-friendly huts. Perhaps there is a good reason that I haven't thought of. Just curious if anyone can point out what I'm missing or let me know where I should inquire if there is support for this idea.
