Fire and Emergency New Zealand

Michael Chubb from Onerahi Volunteer Fire Brigade

Today 1st July 2017 marks the first day of Fire and Emergency New Zealand. This new organisation replaces the New Zealand Fire Service and the many different rural fire authorities that we had for many years.

The new organisation is a merger of all the rural and urban brigades. It will take some time to standardise all these brigades into one.

Really we at Onerahi Volunteer Fire Brigade don't expect to see a lot of change in what we do, but the new Act does recognise that we do more than just fight fires and are in fact an Emergency Service so addresses that gap in the old legislation.

Behind the scenes the path is laid for the organisation to improve even better in the services we provide and become a very efficient, responsive and world class Emergency Service.

Poll: Do you think NZ should ban social media for youth?

The Team from Neighbourly.co.nz

The Australian Prime Minister has expressed plans to ban social media use for children.

This would make it illegal for under 16-year-olds to have accounts on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and X.
Social media platforms would be tasked with ensuring children have no access (under-age children and their parents wouldn’t be penalised for breaching the age limit)
.
Do you think NZ should follow suit? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts below.
