Should scooter riders be forced to wear helmets?
There has been a move to make people - kids, teens and adults - who ride scooters to wear helmets.
I think there are at least two reasons why this is a bad idea.
1/ Impractical. . Many instances of scooter riding in public in short duration such as kids riding from their house to a neighbour's house.
2/ Wearing a helmet will in many cases shift the attitude - so that less care is shown and more speed produced largely on public places such as pavements and this in turn endangers pedestrians of all types who rightly would say that the narrow footpaths are designed for foot traffic.
Already there is a bill before Parliament to enable kids and young teens to ride a bike on the footpath. I hope this bill fails or at least is very restrictive . At present it is illegal for anyone to ride a normal kind of bike on the footpath apart from postal delivery workers.
Cluttering up the footpaths with fast moving scooters, skate boards and bikes is just a recipe for disaster and disdain.
What is with NZ and helmets anyway. We are still the only country in the world where bike helmets are compulsory and now some people in NZ want this extended to include scooter riders. What about helmets for rugby players? Oh, that is already part of the equipment in gridiron/American football.
