Find your fare
Use the Journey Planner to plan your trip and find out how much you'll pay.
Bus and train ticket prices are based on how many fare zones you travel through. For example, going from Henderson to Britomart passes through Waitākere, Isthmus, and City zones, making it a 3-zone trip. Going from Onehunga to Epsom only travels through the Isthmus zone, making it a 1-zone trip.
The maximum you’ll pay is a 4-zone fare, even if you travel further.

You can transfer between AT buses, trains, and ferries and pay only one fare for the whole journey with your AT HOP card or contactless method. Make sure your transfer between services is no more than 30 minutes, and you use the same card for tagging on and off each time. You must finish your journey within four hours.

How to pay for buses and trains
The easiest way to pay for buses and trains in Auckland is with an AT HOP card or contactless method. Contactless includes:
- Visa
- Mastercard
- American Express
- UnionPay
- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
- Samsung Pay.
Payment by these methods is discounted from our cash fare.
‘Tag on’ when you board and ‘tag off’ when you exit. When tagging on and off, remove your card from your wallet or phone case so the correct card gets scanned. Always use the same card or smart device to tag on and off so that you’re charged the correct fare.
Cash and debit cards (EFTPOS) are not accepted on buses. If you have an AT HOP card but your travelling companion does not, you can use credit on your HOP card to pay for them. You’ll be charged a full-price (cash) fare on top of your own fare when you tag on. Ask the driver when you want to do this.
For trains, if you do not have a HOP card or contactless method, you can purchase a single-use ticket from a ticket machine or customer service centre.

Taking bikes, prams, and pets on public transport
Bikes on trains are free
Bikes can be taken on trains free of charge, depending on space and at the discretion of onboard staff. When taking a bike onto the train, board the middle carriage of each 3-car train (second and fifth carriage of 6-car trains).

Prams and large luggage on Auckland buses and trains
Prams can usually be accommodated on buses and trains. On 3-car trains, board the middle carriage. On 6-car trains, board the second or fifth carriage.
Large luggage can usually be taken on board buses and trains, but we advise against this during peak travel times as space is often limited.
Read more about taking prams and luggage on public transport.
Pets on public transport
Disability assist dogs are allowed on buses and trains at all times without a muzzle.
Other domestic pets are allowed with conditions, including being in a suitable carrier and being muzzled.
