The perennial favourite Resene Upcycling Awards are back for fifth year!
Upcycling is the term used for taking a preloved item and transforming it - whether it's for a new purpose altogether, or just to give it an ‘extreme makeover'. You could turn empty wine bottles into a coffee table, pallets into a home entertainment unit or repurpose an old baby cot as a desk for your little learners.
Take part in the 2022 Resene Upcycling Awards. Make sure you tell us about any Resene paints, colours and stains you've used - and don't forget your before and after photos!
Up for Grabs
Four great prizes worth $500 are up for grabs: a $200 Resene voucher and a $300 Prezzy® card!

I recently started making pet houses, tunnels and cat scratches. This is how it all came about. We purchased a flooring business a year ago. I was concerned when I saw the offcuts being thrown away after each carpet install had taken place. I started storing the off cuts away, hoping I would come up with a plan. I also asked the installers to please keep any off cuts aside so that I didn’t have to rummage in the bins. A few months later my fiancé showed me some tubing and asked me if I wanted them. I was delighted as I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I got straight to work and made one for my cat Archie, my sons cat and my daughters cat and dog. They all loved them 🐾. It brings me joy to know that I have saved these things going to the landfill. I am also donating money from each sale to HUHA, I hope this will be a help to them as they do amazing work with animals, please have a look at there website. I would like to thank the staff at flooring design as they have been very supportive. If I was to win this amazing prize I will be donating it to HUHA.

This manikin, I covered with gladwrap then used layers of gesso and chalk paint under and over the doilies for stiffness. Yellow paint over all. Then added plastic flowers, jewellery, buttons, etc, layers of chalk paint, undercoat and top coat, finishing up with pearl beads. I used a manikin found at a 2nd hand shop for the mould. Doilies and all the jewellery etc from 2nd hand shops, garage sales etc.
Resene test pots - energy yellow with white and pearl shimmer for the yellow. Strike master with Special effect Sugar and Spice for pink. Anise, for green and a blue one (paint covering name), and Special effects Gold dust.
It can sit on the manikin or taken off and hung.
I hope you like it.

I came across this old dresser and bed side cabinet. I loved the style but they were old and tired so I gave them some love and decorated them. I used various Resenes blue test pots.

The mahogany table simply needed some light sanding with grits 120 and 240.
The veneer on the oak table, however, was very damaged and could not be repaired, despite several attempts at cleaning, sanding, re-gluing, and patching with wood filler. I then had the idea to remove the damaged area completely and inlay a circle of veneer of a different wood. It was my first time working with veneer and I am very proud of the result.
- Cutting the hole and the inlay to the same shape and size was tricky and required precision.
- After gluing and clamping overnight, the new veneer turned out to be thicker than the old surrounding one, and needed to be sanded down to the same level.
- On that same table, I also used some stain to even out the colour in spots where the old veneer was patchy.
Both tables were then finished with several thin coats of polyurethane, to give them a durable finish.
The result was well worth the effort. Check out for yourself!

I was looking at new furniture for the deck but decided to posh up the old pieces which have more interesting stories. The brown bench seat was a throw out on the side of the road from one of the Brook St, Nelson neighbours. It was barely holding together so I used some screws and bolts and filler to get it stable and tidy. A sand and coat of stain helped bring it back to life. My kind deck builder (who I found on Neighbourly) suggested he use some of the mesh (used for a corner of the deck to support my pot plants) to infill the ends. The church pew came years ago from the Church of Christ in Rutherford St in Nelson and was falling apart after sitting on my deck for so many years. Again my kind builder repaired it voluntarily so I diligently sanded, filled and undercoated with Resene undercoat and top coated with Resene Paradise. The table was old untreated wood, grey with age and with no protective coating so another sanding job and some more filling. Undercoating and a number of test pots of Resene Bullion saw a golden top, and legs in sparkling deep blue Resene Sputnik. The framework of the deck roof I sanded, undercoated and top coated in Resene paint, this time in Sunflower. A coat of the same Resene paint I used to paint the bamboo screen. I finished off with a recycled duvet cover in mustard and white fabric to line the roof. Last weekend a lovely woman was selling a bench seat squab on Neighbourly in the exact colour I needed and perfect size! The finishing touch was a Smashing (Resene match) hibiscus in a Hot August (Resene match) pot from my daughter for Mother's Day. This project was completed over a number of months. Had I realised I would be entering this competition I would have been more careful with my photography and the odd unintended props!

I saved my neighbours old chair from a trip to the dump with the intention to do my first ever upholstery attempt. Using some bright retro fashion fabric and teaming it up with a divine mint spray paint I managed to give it the love and attention it needed. Am really pleased with the outcome and it has earned itself a nickname as the happy chair

The first thing I did was take off the bottom footboards and add timber to cover the length of the desk for both the bottom and the top of the cabinet. I used timber leftover from my brother who did some building. Next I added feet from a vintage cupboard that were broken so I just sawed those bits off and sanded them. I painted the cabinet resene gloss waterborne white. I sanded everything and took the drawers back to raw wood. Replaced the smaller middle drawer with one of the larger drawers adding some hardware I already had. Cut down some old bed slats to make a middle shelf. Made some doors and painted them and the middle cabinet a resene mistint, very close to the colour madras. Put chicken wire on the inside of the doors. Then tiled the top cause its going to be an extra bench/island in the kitchen.

My significant other made a plywood postbox from plywood harvested off an old pallet and painted it drab brown. After watching it gather dust for a few months, I grabbed it one day and snuck off to the Horowhenua art collective's weekly group, where I set about turning it from drab to fab with the help of too many resene test posts to list individually. Project 2 is a drab cane wine cooler, again far too boring for everyday life, but a quick lick of paint soon raised it from the dead.

I have stripped ,sanded and painted the frame with Resene semi gloss black then using stained glass made a picture of Castlepoint lighthouse adding lights behind that light up the lighthouse and from the top spray out as if the lighthouse is working to go on my fence as art .
