   LATEST NEWS
Alexandra-Clyde Neighbourhood Support's Winning Parade Florry
Residents of Cooper Crescent, Otara enjoying this year's Neighbours Day Aotearoa
>> Welcome to our two newest member organisations Tairua and Flat Bush Neighbourhood Support who's applications to join NSNZ were recently accepted by the National Board. They join a network of now 62 NSNZ Member Organisations connecting to over 190,000 households across the country.

>> A warm welcome also to the over 500 households in the Kaikoura and Hurunui districts who have signed up to Neighbourhood Support in recent months. This is the result of an initiative led by North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support, with support from NZ Police, local Councils, and Civil Defence teams. Households who sign up are able to connect through the Gets Ready software programme, which ensures that they receive emergency and community information which can be localised for their street and neighbourhood. To find out more about the project contact Tracy Doe, North Canterbury Neighbourhood Support Area Coordinator, by emailing: coordinator@ncns.org.nz

>> Congratulations to Alexandra-Clyde Neighbourhood Support whose 'despicable' parade florry won two top prizes - ' Best Community' and 'Best Overall' at this year's Alexandra Blossom Festival. This provided a fantastic community building opportunity for Neighbourhood Support members to connect with new members and educate the public about the benefits of joining a Neighbourhood Support group. Over 200 hours of hard work went into transforming this shopping cart into the amazing work of art on wheels that you see above.

>> Thank you to everyone who shared our 1737 post on social media. We are pleased this life-saving information was able to reach over 7,500 kiwis, including 90 shares on Facebook alone! Feeling depressed, anxious, or just need to talk? 1737 is a FREE service that allows you to talk with a trained counsellor over the phone or by text. Click here to learn more.

>> Neighbourhood Support Masterton to launch new initiative that connects newly landed residents from diverse backgrounds with a local neighbourhood buddy. Its purpose is to provide support to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Residents and inform them where to go locally for information and advice, support with immigration processes, English exams, government paperwork, and to deliver important messages around emergency preparedness, community resilience, and crime prevention. [Continue Reading]

>> Waipa District Council to install $240,000 video monitoring system to help keep its community safe. The decision approved 13 cameras to be installed as early as November at key intersections in Te Awamutu and Cambridge. Council's roading manager Bryan Hudson said the project, initially driven by CommSafe (a Neighbourhood Support Member Organisation), is an example of community and Council working together. [Continue Reading]

>> Hastings District Council reaching out to connect with communities. Ensuring Hastings is a network of thriving, safe, enjoyable communities is important to everyone who lives in the district, and is something the Hastings District Council has always supported. Whether it be through assisting people to set up Neighbourhood Support groups, holding street-by-street community events, or creating community plans, supporting the district’s diverse communities develop their strengths is an important role for the council. >> Neighbourhood Support is proud to be an official partner of Neighbours Day Aotearoa. Next year's event will take place from March 22nd - 31st 2019. To learn more about how you can get involved, visit: neighboursday.org.nz

During this year's event, we had 35 Neighbourhood Support groups take part which resulted in over 7,792  participants attending Neighbours Day activities organised by our Member Organisations.

In partnership with Safelet, NSNZ also ran a photo competition for Neighbours Day with members from Cooper Crescent, Otara (South Auckland) taking home the winning prize of a Safelet safety bracelet. Cooper Crescent continue to be an exemplary role model of what Neighbourhood Support is all about. Some examples of their past volunteer-driven mahi includes an annual Christmas lights display that spans their entire street as well as a Youth Movies Night (aimed at keeping youth off the streets) which secured sponsorship to pay for 3 buses to transport tamariki, tickets for the movie and snacks.

   ON THE ROAD
Meeting with Neighbourhood Support members and Police in Whangarei to discuss how we can best support the organisation in their area
The winners of this year's award ceremony hosted at Dunedin Central Police Station honouring the invaluable contributions made by members and partners of Otago Neighbourhood Support Charitable Trust
This past month CEO, Tess Casey, and Community Advisor, Kelsey Scarr, hit the road again to visit with our members. local police, and community partners across the country!

On September 12th and 13th they were in the gorgeous Northland District visiting groups in Whagarei, Waitangi and Kerikeri who have been working closely with the Police to create and sustain new groups across the region. Most recently, they just got back from a Southern District visit to pristine (and chilly!) Queenstown, Alexandra and Dunedin. Both regions are seeing tremendous growth and therefore a change in their crime prevention needs.

Overall, these visits provide an invaluable insight into how things are operating on the ground in each community. Meeting face-to-face with the people running a Neighbourhood Support group at the local level and hearing the challenges they are facing and the successes they are having enriches our ability to best guide our members at a national level.
   GET TO KNOW
We would like officially welcome on board our new Communications Advisor, Alivia Prattas, who joined the Neighbourhood Support New Zealand National Office in August. Alivia will be working closely with CEO, Tess Casey, and our Community Advisor, Kelsey Scarr.

Alivia brings to our small but nimble team a wealth of marketing and communications experience in a variety of industries. A recent transplant to New Zealand, she has previously lived and worked in the United States, Canada, and Australia before relocating to Wellington where she hopes to settle for the foreseeable future.

Alivia looks forward to bringing a fresh approach to Neighbourhood Support's communications and assisting our members to make the most of their outreach efforts.

Should you see Alivia out and about in Wellington, perhaps browsing an op shop or nomming down on the latest vegan options definitely say hello, otherwise you can also email her here.
   COMING UP
Get ready! Our national campaign for all of October will be focusing on Emergency Preparedness.

What better way to prepare than by joining over 600,000 kiwis who are participating in New Zealand ShakeOut - our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi. This year the drill will be taking place on Thursday, October 18th at 9:30 am.

ShakeOut is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake - Drop, Cover and Hold.
