Why this petition matters

Started by Colleen Rigby

The lease for Marina Fitness comes up again for renewal in August 2025, but Council is currently undertaking a Value for Money analysis of the gym and the results of this should be available in the next month.

Marina Fitness is not just a fitness centre, but a community hub and health centre that serves about 700 members from Half Moon Bay, Bucklands Beach, Farm Cove, Sunnyhills and Eastern Beach communities. Many of our members are seniors, who rely on this facility for both physical exercise and social interaction. There are also significant numbers of members who use the ferry to travel to work and find the gym well positioned for them to exercise on the way to and from work. Young people join the  gym because it is a really supportive place. In  addition people with disabilities and injuries benefit from the highly expert staff and rehabilitation at the fitness centre.

Any drastic changes to Marina Fitness would not only impact its members but also local businesses such as cafes, pharmacies, supermarkets and medical centres which are supported by these individuals. The ripple effect would be felt throughout our community.

We urge Auckland City Council and Howick Local Board to renew the lease for an extended period. In the past it was renewed for 6 years and this would be ideal.

We understand that there may be financial pressures or other considerations at play (although we understand the gym is currently more than breaking even) and membership is growing; however, we believe it is crucial to consider the social value that facilities like Marina Fitness provide.

Let's stand together as a community and save our gym! Please sign this petition today to show your support for keeping Marina Fitness open in the long term.
